How to make a wobbler out of a popper. homemade popper

In our time, you will not surprise anyone with fishing on surface lures - topwaters. Such fishing can be very interesting and exciting, and sometimes top waterers can outperform other catchy lures.

Exists several varieties of surface baits- poppers, walkers, proppers (poppers with a propeller), “torpedoes”, crawlers.

What is the lure

Popper is called floating bait with a recess in the bow. During jerky wiring, the popper makes gurgling or champing sounds; some models, when jerking, create fountains of water in front of them.

Branded poppers are made of plastic, in some models the recess has a transparent plastic edging. There is a loop in the recess for fastening the fastener. Most poppers equipped with two triple hooks, often the rear tee carries a wabik (fly). This is done not so much to increase catchability, but to stabilize the game of the bait. Large poppers have three tees.

Of all the surface lures popper is the most accessible for mastering the intricacies of catching topwater. It is not necessary to have a short extra-fast rod, as when fishing with walkers - the popper allows the use of more democratic gear. is an indispensable element of such fishing, although the use is also permissible.

Application area

The main objects for catching poppers are and. Scope of poppers - shallow water areas both overgrown with aquatic vegetation and free from it. Perch can also be caught in open areas of water bodies, especially at those moments when it gathers in flocks and forms “boilers”. Many anglers successfully catch poppers and so-called white predators - ide and asp.

Interesting! There are reservoirs in which the pike completely refuses to peck at poppers, although it reacts quite adequately to other baits. What is the reason for this is unknown, but on an unfamiliar reservoir you can try to catch poppers, counting on luck.

The main time for using poppers is summer and early autumn. In warm water, topwaters are more likely to be attacked by predators.

Posting poppers is not particularly difficult. This short jerks spinning tip almost without pauses. The pike, when attacking, very often misses the popper and, upon re-casting, attacks it again. It is believed that this is due to the fact that the popper goes along the border of two media - air and water, and the pike is not able to accurately aim due to the difference in the refractive indices of these media.

The fishing industry produces many models of poppers - various sizes, colors and shapes. Sometimes they are very expensive and it becomes necessary to make a cheap and catchy popper with your own hands. The material for manufacturing can be very different - the main thing is that the product has positive buoyancy and makes gurgling and chomping sounds during wiring.

How to make from a float

Can be used to make poppers disused floats no longer suitable for their intended use. The material of the floats is balsa, which is fairly easy to work with.

Floats must have elongated shape. Recommended size for fishing perch, ide and chub – 5 centimeters. For pike fishing, it is better to use larger floats. To catch asp, the float should be narrow and elongated to give it the aerodynamic shape necessary for long-distance casting.

In addition to the float itself, you will need a jigsaw, soft steel wire, a sharp knife, a drill, wire cutters, glue, lead strips and a pair of triple hooks and clockwork rings.

Healthy! The fly on the back hook of the popper can be tied by yourself from fly fishing materials - Lurex, feathers. On sale you can find ready-made flies tied on high quality tees.

The work on making a popper consists of the following steps:

  1. Using a jigsaw, the narrow parts of the float are sawn off. Then done oblique cut of the thick part of the float. Due to this, the gurgling of the popper is ensured during wiring. You can also leave a straight cut - such poppers also have the right to exist.
  2. In front of the workpiece with a knife is done funnel-shaped recess. This recess is responsible for the characteristic champing during posting.
  3. Making loops. Two options are possible here - either two loops are twisted around the nail and then inserted separately, or a frame is made to the length of the workpiece and two loops are made on it. With a frame, you can be sure that when biting, the loop will not be torn out of the popper's body by a predator.
  4. If there are two separate loops, then a hole is drilled in the recess and tail of the popper. Ready-made loops are inserted into them. If a frame is used, then a cut is made along the body of the workpiece, where this frame is inserted.
  5. The hinge points are filled with glue or epoxy.
  6. Tees are attached to the loops through the winding rings.
  7. The popper is lowered into a container of water. In a static position, its rear end must be immersed in water. To do this, a strip of lead is glued from below under the tail end.
  8. The popper is covered with drying oil and then with paint. After drying, it is desirable to additionally cover the popper with a waterproof varnish.
  9. Popper is ready to go.

Making from a knot from a tree

If there are no more unnecessary floats left or their size does not suit the angler, you can make a popper from tree knot. This is much easier than cutting a blank from a single piece of wood - you can always pick up a piece of a branch of the desired diameter. As a material, you can use linden, ash or birch.

Attention! Wood for making popper must be dry. Raw and rotten branches should not be used in any case.

The tools for making a popper will need the same, you will additionally need a file and sandpaper. The process of making a popper from a knot is as follows:

  1. A piece of the desired length is cut off, then with the help of a sharp knife, file, sandpaper, the workpiece is given the desired shape. The front end of the workpiece is sawn off at an oblique angle or left straight.
  2. A recess is made in front of the workpiece with a table knife. You can use a large diameter drill for this purpose.
  3. Using a long and thin drill, an axial hole is made through the body of the bait. Another option is to cut along the body of the workpiece.
  4. The wire is threaded through and loops are made at its ends. If a cut is made, then a wire of the required length with ready-made loops is laid in it. When making a large-sized pike popper, an additional abdominal tee becomes necessary. In this case, a hole is drilled in the right place, where the loop is inserted, and when the frame is glued into the cut in the belly of the bait, the loop is made in advance on the wire.
  5. The wire structure is fixed with epoxy resin or glue.
  6. If necessary, the back of the bait is loaded with lead.
  7. This is followed by impregnation with drying oil and painting.

    Important! The color of the popper is not as important to the predator as the color of other lures that work in the water column. It is better to focus on the fact that the bait is clearly visible to the spinner performing the wiring. Therefore, it is preferable to use bright colors.

  9. The popper is covered with waterproof varnish.
  10. After attaching the triple hooks through the winding rings, the popper is ready to use.

Homemade transparent from a syringe

Another interesting homemade popper can be made from plastic syringe. In a pharmacy, you can buy several disposable syringes of different sizes and make poppers of various sizes from them. The tools and materials that you need to have on hand when making this bait are as follows: several wine corks, soft steel wire, balls from small bearings, a sharp knife, round nose pliers and wire cutters, a drill, tees with winding rings.

Consider the step-by-step instructions for making a popper from a syringe:

  1. First, the syringe is disassembled into parts, the nose and ends at the stem are cut off with a knife.
  2. Using a knife, two cylinders are cut out of the cork, turned on all sides so that their diameter matches the diameter of the syringe inlets. For the front of the syringe, a cylinder is made about twice as long as for the back.
  3. One of the cork cylinders is pierced with a wire, then it is inserted into the remaining part of the rod, and, finally, the second cylinder is strung on it. Before putting on the second cylinder, metal balls are poured into the body of the syringe.
  4. The whole structure is brought to the point where all its parts fit snugly together.
  5. A hole is drilled in front of the syringe opposite the cork cylinder and a wire loop is inserted there for the front tee.
  6. Loops are also made at the free ends of the wire.
  7. It remains to attach the winding rings with tees and the original bait is ready.
  8. It is not necessary to paint the popper from a syringe.

The three considered options for making poppers are most common among anglers who are fond of creating homemade lures. You can also make mini poppers out of bottle caps (a champagne cork will do) and equip them with just one back hook. For the manufacture of such baits, as a rule, drawings are not required.

How to make a poplar popper yourself? In this article I will tell and show the process of making a popper at home.

An increasing number of spinners prefer catching fish with poppers. This bait is used mainly in fresh waters. In reservoirs and rivers overgrown with grass, looking like fry, it will surely attract pike or perch. Such a device attracts predators and significantly increases the catch, making fishing more exciting and exciting.

Popper Features

Many experienced fishermen note that poppers can captivate even an inactive predator. The wiring creates noise and splashes, provoking the fish to an instinctive reflex attack. The fact that it rarely clings to snags and goes to waste also speaks in favor of the device.

Poppers are usually divided into 3 types:

With front shipment;

With back shipment;

With an average load.

The front load provides the device with the ability to dive and run smoothly at a shallow depth, which reaches 10 cm. The rear load is needed for long-distance casts. The working depth of such a bait is at least 40 cm. The average weight contributes to a heavier flight of the popper during casting, but the device does not sink deep, but can withstand a dive of 20 cm.

Making your own bait is easy. For work you will need:

A small block of wood (10X6X4 cm);

Wire (for "ears");

Tee hook;

Material for shipment (tin or lead);

Stationery knife;

Hacksaw for metal;

a piece of sandpaper;

Pencil;

Waterproof paint or varnish.

Step by step making a popper

1) A wooden block (the wood must be soft) is sawn into 3 parts. From each such part, you can make a separate figure.

2) On the surface of the bar, you need to draw an image of the future bait. Then, a given shape is cut out according to the drawing. The cut of the front working side is made oblique. For this work you will need a knife, a file and sandpaper.

3) A correctly made workpiece is symmetrical and has no chips.

4) A central cut is made at the bottom of the workpiece. The depth of cut should not be more than the middle of the mold. Lead will be poured into this hole.

5) This popper has a slanted nose section, which will ensure its immersion in water. In this case, the load is best placed at the back of the bait. If the workpiece weighs about 2 g, a load of, for example, 0.5 g of lead will be enough.

6) It remains to glue the "ears" made of wire. After the glue dries, the workpiece is sanded and painted.

7) At the last stage, the mini popper is equipped with rings with hooks. The finished product can weigh about 4.5 g.

The use of popper is relevant from June to mid-September. This feature is explained by the fact that a cold snap forces the fry to sink to a depth, so other types of baits will be needed to attract a predator in the cold season.

One of the new baits, still known to a not very wide circle of anglers, is the popla popper.

It's quite interesting float/popper hybrid, originally invented specifically for catching large rudd, but, as it turned out later, by choosing the right wiring and the appropriate bait, other types of fish can also be successfully caught on it. Having appreciated the full potential of this bait, many fishermen become its adherents, achieving success under the most unfavorable fishing conditions.

Detailed description of the lure

Simply put, popla popper is small float with popper properties. It has, as a rule, a drop-shaped shape, in its frontal part a familiar notch is made to create chomping sounds and splashes, but at the back, in the place where the classic popper has a tee, there is an ordinary loop for attaching the leash.

There are no blades for deepening or a propeller on them. The leash is usually taken not longer than 12 - 15 cm, it is equipped with a single hook, preferably with a long forearm. Some kind of artificial bait imitating a worm, larva, etc. is fixed on the hook. In some cases, to activate the bite, a live worm or maggot is planted. Catching on it takes place with the help of light spinning.

To date, there are two types of this interesting industrial-made bait on the market:

  1. MPP. They have a head size of 23mm.
  2. BPP. They have a slightly larger head - 30 mm.

The standard sizes of the pop-popper are very small, their length may be different, but, as a rule, it does not exceed 30 - 35 mm, and the weight is within 2 - 4 gr. In this regard, not without reason, it is believed that the popla popper is intended for, in extreme cases, for light tackle.

They are issued in three colors: white, yellow and the so-called "red fly agaric", dark red, and BPP-type lures are only yellow and red. For greater visibility when fishing at long distances, small black spots are applied to some samples.

Main advantages

Fishing with a popla popper is gaining popularity due to the following advantages:

  1. Simplicity and efficiency of equipment.
  2. The possibility of long-range casting (more than 30 m) when fishing on light and ultralight.
  3. The resulting squelching sound effect, attracting the attention of fish from a distance.
  4. When fishing, cases of hooks and loss of gear are very rare. Thanks to this, you can fish in places with dense aquatic vegetation.

This bait, despite its small size, with the right wiring able to attract the attention of large fish.

Attention! Many experienced anglers, when fishing with this bait, instead of a hook, attach a miniature jig head to the leash. Due to this, the bait sinks faster, which has a positive effect on the number of bites.

In addition to rudd, they are good for him: perch, asp, chub, and even grass carp and carp. When fastened on a hook, instead of artificial bait, an ordinary worm, crucian carp most often comes across.

Homemade popla popper

Some spinners add various lures to their arsenal. homemade popla poppers, the benefit of making it is quite simple and short. A variety of improvised materials are suitable for its manufacture, it is quite possible to make a catchy popla popper even from a lollipop stick.

In this case, the main fishing line with a stopper at the bottom passes through the stick. In the upper part of the stick, a small funnel or cone with a notch made of foam or other dense material is placed on the glue. With its help, the necessary noise and splashes will be created during wiring. It turns out a float that, when twitching the tackle with a rod, can work like a popper.

More popular materials for making a do-it-yourself popper are natural champagne cork or fine-grained, dense foam.

To make a good popla popper, you will need:

  1. Natural cork or a small piece of dense foam.
  2. A piece of stainless wire with a cross section of 1 - 1.5 mm and a length of about 10 cm.
  3. A small piece of lead or a small fishing pellet.
  4. Fishing line for a leash (you can use fluorocarbon).
  5. Hook with a long shank No. 5 - 7.
  6. Sandpaper.
  7. Waterproof glue and colored varnish (you can use nail polish).

You will also need a set of tools:

  • sharp knife with a thin blade;
  • pliers;
  • round nose pliers;
  • vise;
  • wire cutters.

Popper popper is made according to the following algorithm:

  1. From the material for the body (cork or polystyrene), we cut off a workpiece about 30 mm long.
  2. With the help of a knife, we give the body of the popper popper the shape of a large drop with a blunt nose.
  3. With a knife and a large sandpaper in the bow, we make a cup-shaped recess, which will be responsible for the sound and splashes. You can also make it with a drill of a suitable diameter (28-30 mm).
  4. We process the entire surface of the bait with sandpaper to give it a complete shape.
  5. From the wire we make a mount for the leash and the main fishing line. It is necessary to bend it so that loops are obtained on both sides of the fastener. Keep track of the length of the parts.
  6. A longitudinal incision is made in the body to the center axial line. We insert the fastener there.
  7. In the same cut, you need to introduce a small plate of lead, which serves as a load of the bait. After that, we fill the cut with waterproof glue (you can take epoxy resin) and carefully clamp the workpiece in a vise until it dries.
  8. The bait is polished with fine sandpaper.
  9. Next, it needs to be painted with varnish of the selected color and allowed to dry. Repeat this procedure twice.
  10. We attach a leash with a hook to the back ringlet.
  11. A carabiner can be attached to the front ring for a more convenient change of bait during fishing.

Everything, homemade popla popper is ready for fishing.

Important! The weight of the load is selected taking into account that the bait should not sink, it should only sink it a little. Thanks to this, the popla popper does not twist and always remains in one position (the heavier side is always on the bottom).

In one day, it is quite possible to make several of these lures of different sizes and different colors.

Features of the use of bait

Of course, fishing on popla popper is very reckless and belongs to active types of fishing. You can catch both ordinary, peaceful fish and predators.

In order for fishing to be effective, you need to choose the appropriate equipment for it. Popla popper equipment has its own characteristics:

  1. Light class rod should not be longer than 2.4 meters, even if casts are made from the shore. This rod makes it easier to make long and accurate casts of light bait.
  2. It is better to take a light reel(1000 - 1500), inertialess type. The sensitivity of the tackle largely depends on the quality of its work.
  3. More suitable as a main line small diameter braid. It is able to withstand the resistance of a large rudd or other fish, even if it goes into the reeds after hooking. Enough fishing line with a breaking load of up to 5.5 kg.
  4. Hooks must be of good quality., designed for the fact that grass carp can also get caught, capable of unbending them during an active struggle.

A true fisherman spends his whole life looking for the perfect bait, while the fish at this time pretends to be a fastidious gourmet. That's why this search process runs the risk of stretching out indefinitely.

We make popper with our own hands from A to Z

For optimistic fishermen, I propose to prove themselves as a craftsman and make a popper with your own hands.

  • Firstly is a cost savings
  • Secondly- Self-realization and the embodiment of your fantasies.

In this article, I will not give sweet bait that will catch any fish everywhere! In this article, I'll just talk about how I made a couple of poppers, which, in my opinion, work just fine on .

Welcome to the workshop

For the main material I took balsa(the lightest tree). If not available, then use willow or linden.

First step

We take a bar, for example 60X30X30 mm. Sizes can be customized to your liking. With a marker, draw the desired shape, and then remove the excess. All this is black work. Then we proceed to turning, as a result of which you should get the shape of a popper.

I turned it with sandpaper glued to the bar, but you can use other improvised means.

For "choosing" inside I used a scalpel and fine sandpaper (in balsa this is easier to do than in other wood).

Second step

The second step is to make an iron frame and cut (groove) for it. First of all, we saw through a groove with a hacksaw for metal, from the tail to the head in the abdominal cavity. We deepen the groove to the middle of the piece.

Since the width of the blade at the hacksaw is small, it will have to be bored, in which case a flat file will come in handy.
For the manufacture of a metal frame, we need wire? 0.8-1.5 mm.(preferably stainless steel).
First we bend the ring for the abdominal hook, and then the ring for the tail and swivel.

in poper "unhooked" everything is easier, if you do not have enough length of the double, screw the wire to it and make a loop.

Third step

The third step is loading. After you have inserted the metal frame into our groove, we insert the lead plates while clamping the frame inside. The main thing is not to overdo it.

Make sure that the popper does not sink.

Now our workpiece needs to be smeared with epoxy, since the balsa is soft and light, and resin will give it hardness and weight. Epoxy also needs to cover the groove.

After the resin has dried, we grind the workpiece.
After the workpiece has become smooth, we glue it with foil. (such foil is used in construction)

Before painting, be sure to wipe the foil with alcohol. I used light green paint, but you can use another one (there is no friend for the taste and color).

We paint in 2-3 layers. Well, after the paint has dried, it all depends solely on the height of your imagination.

I had a troiban with a minus at my drawing school, and my flight is not very high.

Having decorated the blank with all the colors of the rainbow (just kidding), it needs to be covered with waterproof varnish, in 2-3 layers.

After complete drying, for strength, you can once again coat your finished popper with epoxy.

Last step before big fishing

It remains to attach the hooks and wait for the right moment to go fishing.

Popper with double this is a small upgrade"Croatian egg", which does not cling to surface vegetation. At the same time, I think that the double should improve the performance of bites.

I have already tested my products on the water to see their performance, and the catchability will be discussed in my fishing reports.

P.S.

For coloring, use permanent markers, they are not washed off with varnish.
There is no limit to perfection, but we must strive for it.
