Rules for carrying liquids in hand luggage: features, requirements and recommendations. How to transport musical instruments and sports equipment? How to pack for hand luggage

Travelers who are going to fly by plane must know and strictly comply with the rules and regulations for carrying liquids in hand luggage. These rules are quite similar for all airlines in the world (with the exception of a few nuances). Some carriers may have small deviations and indulgences for domestic flights. Let's study in detail how much liquid you can take on an airplane in hand luggage.

In total, you can carry no more than one liter of liquid in hand luggage (do not confuse this concept with luggage). Containers containing it should not exceed 100 ml. That is, you will not be allowed to take a 200-gram tube of suntan cream on board, even if there is only a third of it left.

The traveler can take on board the aircraft no more than one liter of liquid. All tubes should be stored in one transparent plastic bag with a zipper. Packages are commercially available (usually their dimensions are approximately 200 by 200 mm). A plastic bag with containers and tubes is presented by the passenger when passing through the counter (it is inspected by Security Service). Security officials have different attitudes towards liquids - some will just glance at your package, some will make you open the containers to make sure there are no contraband or prohibited items. Be prepared for this.

Note: If you want to avoid delays and missing your flight, store liquids in containers with the indicated volume. The airport security service will not have any claims against you.

For liquids, you can buy a special “flight” kitit is sold in the respective shops. It is very convenient - plastic translucent containers marked by volume will not cause any questions from customs officers. You can take baby food with you (it does not need to be put in a bag, as it is personal items), but do not forget to present the jars at the counter.

What is "liquid"

For many first-time travelers on an airplane, it will be a revelation what exactly most airlines mean by the concept of “liquid”. In addition to water and juices, this concept includes:

  • all kinds of yoghurts;
  • alcohol;
  • any baby food;
  • soft cheeses (the same mozzarella, feta or camembert);
  • homemade compotes, seamings;
  • jam;
  • any canned food;
  • gels, shampoos;
  • liquid deodorants, varnishes, sprays, creams, etc. (in case they are safe).

All these “liquids” can be taken on a plane without being checked in as baggage. But do not forget about the main limitation of one hundred milliliters. Especially often travelers make mistakes with canned food: they have to be either repackaged or thrown away. Even if canned food is 99% solid, it is still considered “liquid”. Since the volume of jars is usually 200-250 ml, this is considered a violation.

Baby food in the amount of more than 100 ml. you can take it only when a child under 2 years old is flying with you. The amount of baby food should not exceed the supply that can be useful for the duration of the flight (you will not be allowed to take 10 packages with you for the entire stay). Alcohol is also a rather controversial product - many airlines have introduced prohibition on board and do not approve the carriage of "scoundrels" in hand luggage. Tipsy passengers may not be allowed on board at all, and if you start drinking alcohol on board, you will simply be fined. But not all companies have this policy.

How to transport liquid medicines?

Considering the question of how much liquids can be carried in hand luggage, it is necessary to touch on the topic of medicines. In general, drugs can be taken on board the aircraft, but there are several features. The volume of bubbles is limited to the same 100 milliliters. If they contain narcotic substances, then you will need a certificate with a seal from the hospital stating that this medicine is necessary for you (the names on the ticket and the certificate must match). In some cases, you may be allowed to carry more than one pack of medicines if you confirm that you really need it. If you have a prescription, you can bring liquid medications in vials of more than 100 milliliters, but it must be in the original packaging. Medicines are generally prohibited from pouring into their own containers. In this case, you will have to pack the medicine in a separate bag and report it to the security service at check-in.

Note: if you are flying to another country, then the doctor's prescription or medical statement must be translated by a certified translator into English language.

Many medicines allowed in our country are prohibited in other countries. For example, valocordin, corvalol, nurofen, cough syrups, etc. Therefore, be sure to study the requirements of the legislation of the countries to which you are flying. It is also forbidden to carry on board various medicinal aerosols (the same panthenol). If you have asthma or another illness and you need aerosols for the duration of the flight, then take an extract from the illness and a certificate from the hospital with you. If you do not have a prescription, and at the customs of the host country you are found to have prohibited medications (especially those containing narcotic drugs), then a criminal case will be opened against you.

Liquids from Duty Free

Purchases made in the duty-free zone are not subject to the 100 ml rule. You can safely buy perfume or alcohol, but just do not forget about total weight hand luggage. Purchased from Duty free goods must be properly sealed (they must not be opened during the flight).

Note: if your route involves a transfer, then do not open the goods from Duty Fre - they will immediately fall under the standard rules. Some European countries prohibit the import of liquids purchased in free trade zones outside the EU.

Guide: baggage allowance and carry-on baggage of 10 popular airlines

Air carriers, in particular, low-cost airlines now and then tighten the requirements for hand luggage and baggage, forcing passengers to pay more. So that you do not get lost in the stream of constant updates of the rules, we have collected in one material the rules of ten popular airlines, the knowledge of which will allow you to save tens or even hundreds of euros.

Important nuances

  1. Check the rules of all airlines you will use during your trip and make sure that your hand luggage and luggage comply with the more restrictive rules.
  2. Please note that you can buy tickets from and fly from. This happens when a code-sharing agreement is signed between companies. In this case, the rules of the airline whose code is indicated on the ticket apply. It is useless to prove at the airport that you did not know - you will have to pay for an excess or additional baggage.
  3. Many airlines check the dimensions of hand luggage using special devices at the airport. Everything that does not fit in the frame will have to be checked in as luggage (especially zealous ones take into account even handles that look out half a centimeter). We recommend that you check your hand luggage in advance - luggage is cheaper at the check-in counter than at the gate, it's even better to foresee this situation when buying tickets online.
  4. Important! Low-cost airlines do not have flights with transfers. Each segment of the route is a separate flight, so every time you need to pick up your luggage and check it in again, therefore, you also need to pay extra for it on each segment.

Liquids in hand luggage. Is it possible or not?

In total, you are allowed to carry 1 liter of liquids in containers with a maximum of 100 milliliters each. The volume of the container matters: a two-liter bottle, in which two sips of juice are left, will not be missed. All liquids must be placed in a transparent zippered bag (such as a ziplock bag for freezing fruit or a cosmetic bag) and presented for security screening if asked.

Liquids include:

  • roller deodorants;
  • shaving foam, shampoo, shower gel;
  • toothpaste;
  • perfumes and toilet water;
  • tonic, makeup remover, cream, mascara;
  • alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks;
  • medicines: eye, nasal and ear drops, oral solutions and tinctures, topical products, gels;
  • some foodstuffs: soft cheese, yogurt, pate, jam, honey, etc.
  • Travelers with children under two years of age. Food for the child (mashed potatoes, milk, juices, formula, etc.) can be in packages of any volume in the amount necessary for the duration of the flight.
  • Those who need to take medication regularly. In this case, you can take with you drugs in packages that exceed 100 milliliters, but do not forget to grab a certificate from your doctor.

What about duty free shopping?

Perfume, toilet water, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from stores duty free can be taken on board if they are packed with a receipt and sealed (do not try to drink whiskey from your throat on the plane).

Difficulties may arise if you are flying with a transfer. So, in the EU it is forbidden to import liquids in containers whose volume exceeds 100 milliliters if they are purchased outside the EU. That is, if you fly from Kharkov to Prague via Warsaw, at the transfer point, a bottle of wine from Ukrainian duty free is most likely to be confiscated. For those who travel within the EU, it is enough not to open the package and carry a receipt confirming that the purchase was made no more than a day ago. The last word in any case remains with the airport employee.

Can I carry food in hand luggage?

Yes, but if they are liquid, they will need to be packaged in 100 milliliters and packaged in accordance with the rules. Feel free to bring cookies, chocolate, apples, nuts or sandwiches with you on board, but make sure that your food does not emit pungent odors.

Can I take electronic devices on a plane?

Need to! You've seen how suitcases are handled at airports, right?

You are allowed to carry in hand luggage:

  • laptops;
  • Cell phones;
  • tablets and e-books;
  • e-Sigs;
  • cameras;
  • hair dryers, curling irons, hair straighteners;
  • electric shavers;
  • electric toothbrushes;
  • power banks.

What is prohibited in hand luggage?

In short, everything that is potentially dangerous for passengers and crew members due to its toxicity or can be used to attack.

  • liquids in containers with a volume of more than 100 milliliters (except those bought in duty free and properly packaged);
  • aerosols (hairspray, deodorant, mosquito repellent, etc.);
  • piercing and cutting objects: screwdrivers, drills, nails, corkscrew, sewing needles, blades, all kinds of knives, scissors, nail files, tweezers with sharp ends, knitting needles, etc. There are exceptions: sometimes it is allowed to carry a knife with a blade shorter than 6 centimeters or tweezers with rounded edges, if you have a certificate from a doctor, you can take injection syringes with you. But you need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario: if the thing is dear to you, put it in your luggage or leave it at home.
  • firearms and any of its imitations (lighters, children's toys);
  • adhesive tape, electrical tape;
  • explosive and flammable substances: gunpowder, firecrackers, fireworks, lighter fluid, etc.;
  • mercury thermometers (in some countries this restriction does not apply, but it is better to buy an electronic one and not worry);
  • skates, ski and trekking poles;
  • stun guns;
  • caustic and toxic substances: acids, alkalis, poisons;
  • bats, clubs, clubs, nunchucks, oars, skateboards, fishing rods;
  • gas and petrol lighters.

Can animals be brought on board?

Each airline has its own rules, so it's best to ask them in advance. For example, UIA allows only dogs and cats weighing up to 8 kilograms to be transported in the cabin together with the container. Larger animals are transported in the luggage compartment. Service animals fly free of charge (for example, guide dogs), for other pets you will have to pay at a special rate. The owner must have a medical certificate, documents confirming vaccination and an export permit.

How to transport musical instruments and sports equipment?

Sports equipment is usually transported in checked baggage or as oversized cargo, at a special rate (if we are talking about skis or snowboards, for example). Even a skateboard or tennis rackets will not be allowed on board, as theoretically they can be used as weapons.

small musical instruments, which do not exceed allowable dimensions hand luggage (flute, violin), some airlines allow you to take it with you into the cabin. Everything else will have to be checked in.

How to properly pack hand luggage and what to do in case of overweight?

  • Put things that you will most likely have to get at security control (a laptop and other powerful equipment, a bag of liquids) on top, so that you can quickly remove them later. Neighbors in turn and airport staff will thank you.
  • Liquids must be packaged in containers with a maximum of 100 milliliters, remember? If what you want to take with you is not sold in mini-packages, pour over - the bubbles do not have to be “native”.
  • If you are taking medicines with you, it is better that they are in their original packaging with instructions inside. If you have sleeping pills, strong painkillers, psychotropic and injectable drugs, do not forget to take a prescription from your doctor with you.
  • Put everything of value in your hand luggage: documents, money, jewelry, equipment. And don't forget to keep an eye on your backpack at the airport, of course.
  • You should always take with you a power bank, warm clothes, medicines that you constantly take and a light snack in case of a flight delay.
  • Make sure you don't accidentally put anything on the prohibited items list. The author of these lines, for example, somehow threw scotch tape into her backpack, and then blushed and justified herself in front of the vigilant employees of the Kutaisi airport.
  • If you are flying with a low-cost airline, do not stuff your backpack to the limit. Leaving an empty space inside, you can tamp it down a bit and fit it into a frame with which to check the dimensions.
  • Weigh the assembled backpack or suitcase at home and make sure it passes the airline's regulations. If the excess was found already at the airport, you can put on something from the clothes packed in your hand luggage, put heavy objects in your pockets small size or pick up a camera, e-book, etc., if the carrier allows it.

Hand luggage raises many questions. To avoid unpleasant situations when boarding a flight, learn about the basic safety requirements and airline restrictions on baggage on board. Prohibited items, number of pieces, carry-on size and weight, liquids, food and medicine.

What can you take on a plane

If hand luggage is not the only luggage with which you fly, then you should take only the most valuable and necessary things on the road from those allowed for transportation with you on the plane:

  • money
  • bank cards
  • documentation
  • equipment and gadgets (phone, camera, computer, tablet)
  • jewelry
  • fragile items

The rest of the contents of hand luggage depends on the airline's baggage requirements and your desire to carry it all. Take the quiz What can I bring on board?

All relevant information about the rules for carrying hand luggage is posted on the websites of airports and airlines. Safety standards are mandatory for everyone, and the number of pieces, weight and size of hand luggage are regulated by airlines.

What not to take in hand luggage

It is prohibited to transport dangerous items and substances in the aircraft cabin and checked baggage:

  • weapon
  • flammable substances and liquids
  • liquefied gases
  • explosives
  • toxic/radioactive/poisonous/corrosive substances
  • piercing and sharp objects

Seemingly harmless household items cannot be carried in hand luggage: a corkscrew, a nail file with sharp edges and nail clippers, scissors, tweezers, a straight razor, a folding knife, a corkscrew, knitting needles. All this must be checked in, and if it is not there, then look for alternatives or buy it on the spot. For example, an electric razor or a razor with replaceable blocks are allowed in hand luggage, and nail files are soft.

Rules for carrying liquids in hand luggage

How much liquid can you carry?

If additional security measures are not introduced, then in hand luggage it is allowed to carry liquids with a total volume of 1 liter in packages of not more than 100 ml. You can carry any amount of liquids in any volume in your baggage.

Liquids include: water, drinks, creams, lotions, aerosols, gels, foams, pastes, etc. Cosmetics (mascara, lip gloss) are also liquids. Keep in mind that if the 200 ml shampoo bottle is half filled, then it cannot be transported. The liquids of people flying together do not add up.

Watch a video on how to economically check in luggage on a plane:

A traveler who is accustomed to flying by plane knows the rules for carrying hand luggage, including how much liquid you can take on a plane. Of course, among the generally accepted rules there are exceptions, which everyone gets acquainted with on their own. This is important to know, because the liquid that is in the package, the larger volume or more than allowed by the rules of the air carrier, will be seized at the airport. To avoid unpleasant incidents, it is best to prepare in advance.

Before dealing with volumes, you should find out what exactly the airline refers to the concept of "liquid". In addition to juice or water, the list includes: yogurt, baby food, alcohol, honey, seamings, jam, homemade compote, canned food, shampoo, gel, cream, soft cheese (feta, mozzarella). They also include deodorants, if they are not dangerous. If you are not sure that you have correctly determined the amount of liquid that you plan to take on board, then it is better not to risk it. For example, some passengers take canned food with them, the volume of which is 200 ml, and the packaging indicates that the product is 90% solid. But for the security service, this item is clearly considered a violation, since canned food refers to liquids.

How much liquid can you take on a plane. Transport rules:

    You can carry no more than 1 liter of liquid in hand luggage. This is the total figure. But at the same time, one container should be no more than 100 milliliters. You can not take with you, for example, a tube of cream with a volume of 200 milliliters, even if there is only half left. Airport workers look at the denomination, which is indicated on the package.

    For all tubes and jars of liquid, there must be one common special transparent bag with a zipper. Its size is usually 20 * 20 cm. It is checked by the security service at the airport. Everyone has a different attitude towards liquid containers. Some employees may let them pass without even examining them, while at other airports they will be forced to open a jar to make sure that there are no prohibited substances.

    If you are traveling with a child and take baby food with you, then there is no need to put it in a separate bag. Firstly, it does not apply to hand luggage, but to personal items, and secondly, you will not have any questions if you present it to the security service during the check. But here, too, you need to know the measure. For example, the amount of food is strictly limited. It must be taken only for the duration of the flight, no one will allow you to carry 10-15 packages. If a child under 2 years old is flying with you, then you can take baby food with a volume of more than 100 ml.

    To transport medicines, you need to understand that not all of them are allowed in other countries. In addition, the same rule of 100 milliliters in one package must be followed, and they require a separate ziplock bag. Be sure to present them at the counter. If they contain, for example, narcotic substances, then you need to have a certificate confirming that you need them with the signature and seal of a doctor. The certificate must contain the date, and the last name must clearly match yours. Sometimes for a flight to another country it is necessary to translate this document into English. If you do not follow all the necessary rules, then the receiving party may detain you and start a criminal case.

In general, in order not to bother with such details, you can buy a special summer set. It is sold in transparent tubes and jars of 100 ml each. In this case, you will not have unnecessary questions, and the check will be faster.

Transportation of alcohol is considered a separate item. Some airlines completely forbade bringing it on board, while others are more loyal to this issue. If you start drinking alcohol during the flight, you will be fined. And some even do not allow drunk passengers on board.

Products purchased from DutyFree can be transported in packages larger than 100 ml, but they are included in the total weight of hand luggage, which should not exceed 10 kg. If more, then you have to pay extra. Usually buy perfume and alcohol. In addition, these goods must be packed before the end of the flight. They cannot be opened and used during flight.

Red and black caviar also belong to the concept of "liquid". They also cannot be transported in hand luggage in packages larger than 100 ml. So if you are going to take a different volume with you, then it is better to check it in your luggage.
