Allowed baggage size. How many kg can be carried and taken on a plane per person: what is the allowed weight and allowable size? Weight system for determining the amount of free baggage allowance

Today, air travel is the most convenient and fastest way to travel. However, even those who fly not for the first time often encounter a number of certain issues. Some of the most common are related to the transportation of luggage - how many kg of luggage can be carried on an airplane for free, what norm is considered acceptable and how many kilograms can be taken on an airplane per person.

Before boarding the plane, any passenger will have to go through the baggage weighing procedure. Only some things that a person takes with him to the aircraft cabin are not taken into account - this is a handbag, phone, laptop, crutches, a wheelchair and a cane. Each company has its own established rules, and if the luggage weighs more than a certain norm, then the passenger will have to pay according to the tariffs.

How much can one person carry for free?

Most airlines accept the following fares for transportation free baggage:

  • Economy class passengers can carry up to 20 kg;
  • Business class passengers up to 30 kg;
  • When buying a first class ticket, you are allowed to carry up to 40 kg.

Usually this rate is calculated from the total weight of the baggage and hand luggage. But some companies do not count hand luggage when calculating, so you should check the rules with your carrier. It is worth remembering that these are average values, the norm is set by a particular company.

You should also take into account the length of your baggage. For economy class passengers, baggage must not exceed 158 cm, and for first and business class no more than 203 cm.

In addition to weight control in airlines, there is also an assessment of baggage by the number of pieces. Also an important condition is the choice of class when buying a ticket, since the more expensive and higher the class, the more loyal the conditions for the transportation of things.

To successfully transport your own things, you should consider some rules:

  1. Baggage weight cannot be combined. Suppose two people are flying and carrying luggage in the amount of two bags, the norm should not exceed 32 kg, one bag weighs 35 kg, and the other 30, for the first bag you will have to pay extra at the rate of 3 extra pounds.
  2. Wheels, pockets and other accessories of the bag itself are necessarily taken into account when determining the weight, and not just what is in it.
  3. Transportation of non-standard luggage must be coordinated with the airline, some things are allowed to be carried for a fee, some for free. For example, skis or a bike are usually calculated as one piece without taking into account weight and length.

Free baggage allowance per airline

Transaero

Transaero uses the following principles for determining the weight of baggage: the first group - all flights, except for transatlantic ones, the second group - it includes destinations to America, Brazil and Canada. In the first group, up to 20 kg of free baggage can be carried by passengers on a Tourist ticket, up to 25 kg can be carried on an airplane in Economy class, up to 35 kg can be carried free of charge on a business ticket, up to 45 kg when buying an imperial class ticket.

If we talk about the second group, then there are two free luggage places and weighing no more than 25 kg for tourist and economy classes, for business class tickets, two baggage pieces of 32 kg are installed, imperial class passengers are allowed to carry baggage in the amount of three pieces weighing no more than 32 kg each.

If baggage exceeds the established number of kilograms, then the excess fee will be from 100 to 150 dollars, depending on the weight.

If you are going to fly on S7 flights, then you must take into account the following rules: passengers in economy class are allowed to carry hand luggage weighing no more than 10 kg, baggage for a fee - no more than 23 kg, in economy class flexible hand luggage should not exceed 10 kg, and baggage allowance is limited to 23 kg.

When buying a ticket for the basic class, you are allowed to take hand luggage for two pieces with a total weight of not more than 15 kg, and one free piece of baggage weighing no more than 32 kg is also provided.

If the weight of one piece of baggage exceeds 23 kg, then the passenger will have to pay an extra fee of 25 euros on average, and if the baggage weighs more than 32 kg, then you need to pay about 50 euros.

Aeroflot

Aeroflot has the following baggage allowances: when buying a business class ticket, you can carry 2 pieces of baggage no more than 32 kg each, comfort class and premium tickets provide for two pieces no more than 23 kg each, and economy tickets allow you to carry 1 piece no more than 23 kg.

On an Aeroflot plane, you can take hand luggage weighing 10 kg for economy class passengers and 15 kg for business class.

If, when transporting baggage with Aeroflot, the weight exceeds 23 kg, but not more than 32 kg, then the passenger will have to pay 50 euros for flights within Russia and 100 dollars for flights to a number of other destinations. If the baggage weight exceeds 32 kg, but not more than 50 kg, then the passenger must pay 100 euros for flights within the country and 150 dollars for other destinations.

The traveler carries various things with him. He distributes them in suitcases and bags. Some of them are handed over to the luggage compartment, and the rest are taken with them to the cabin. What is hand luggage on an airplane? What are the standards for its transportation?

What is considered hand luggage

This category includes baggage that can be taken directly on board the aircraft. For him, additional passenger seats are provided in the cabin. Airlines have established certain restrictions on the transportation of hand luggage for passengers of various classes:

  • Economy class - 1 extra seat;
  • Business class - 2 seats;
  • First class - 2 seats.

Tourist class is equivalent to economy class. The hand luggage allowance is 1 piece.

It is worth considering that space is provided for more than one bag. There may be several. The main thing is that their weight and dimensions do not exceed the established indicators. Otherwise, the passenger will have to pay for excess or additional seat. You need to read about what applies to hand luggage on the website of the air carrier before buying tickets. This will avoid conflict situations at the front desk.

Carriage rules and allowable luggage size for various airlines

The most stringent restrictions on the transportation of baggage in the cabin are established in low-cost airlines. Employees of companies strictly monitor compliance with established standards.

In the cabin of the aircraft, hand luggage must be in a special compartment. It is located above the seat. If the dimensions do not allow putting it there, the bag is placed under the chair. If the weight of hand luggage exceeds the norms established by the airline, the passenger pays for an extra seat. If you refuse this, luggage is handed over to the luggage compartment.

Interesting! In some cases, it is much cheaper to pay for an additional seat than to check in luggage in the cargo hold.

At Aeroflot, the maximum allowable dimensions for hand luggage are 55 × 20 × 40 cm. Its weight should not exceed 10 kg. This rate is set for one passenger. Even if a child is traveling, he is also allowed to take a bag of the established size into the cabin. The same rules apply to UTair.

Actual!

In Rossiya Airlines, the parameters of hand luggage are similar (55 × 40 × 20 cm). Allowed weight 5 and 10 kg. Economy class passengers are allowed to carry bags weighing up to 5 kg, business class - up to 10 kg.

The KLM air carrier offers passengers to take bags measuring 56 × 35 × 23 cm with them into the cabin. There are no restrictions on how much hand luggage you can take.

The most demanding is the company " Ural Airlines". The weight of luggage in the cabin per passenger cannot exceed 5 kg. And this figure does not depend on who the ticket is issued for (for an adult or a child). Permissible dimensions of hand luggage: 55×40×20 cm.

Rules of other airlines

How many bags are allowed to take with you into the cabin, it is better to check on the airline's website. You can also do this by phone. hotline. It is easy to find it on the first page of the Internet resource.

What can you take in hand luggage

It is allowed to take a small handbag, a folder for papers, a briefcase for documents, outerwear, books, umbrellas, baby food, mobile gadgets into the cabin of the aircraft. Previously, these items were not equated with hand luggage. It was allowed to transport them separately from luggage in the cabin absolutely free of charge.

Note. Baby food can be transported in powder form. It must be labeled appropriately on its packaging.

In 2017, the Ministry of Transport finalized the document on the rules and regulations for the transportation of hand luggage. The permitted weight of luggage in the cabin cannot be less than 5 kg. Airlines can increase this figure, which will increase their competitiveness in the aviation market.

According to the new rules, you can carry the following as "hand luggage" free of charge:

  • ladies bag;
  • folders with documents (they can be lost in the luggage compartment)
  • men's briefcases;
  • backpacks;
  • canes and crutches;
  • walkers, strollers and cradles, etc.

You can put sweets in your hand luggage, meals for a snack on board, liquids in a certain amount, gadgets with removable batteries, books and documents, baby food and medicines for the child. The main thing is not to exceed the established 5 kg.

What is not allowed in hand luggage

It is forbidden to carry an active weapon in the cabin of the aircraft. There is also a ban on the transportation of toys that resemble him. Do not take household chemicals in hand luggage:

  • explosive;
  • flammable;
  • toxic substances.

It is forbidden to carry on board cutting and pointed objects. For example, scissors and nail files, knitting needles and knives. All products that the passenger plans to consume during the flight must be pre-cut.

Bans have been placed on the transportation of razors and machine blades. Exceptions are safety machines and disposable razors.

Items purchased from Duty Free

Each traveler purchases goods in the zone duty free installed at the airport. Airlines allow these products to be carried as hand luggage.

Important! Restrictions on the transportation of products from Duty Free are established by all states.

Therefore, it is necessary to comply with the rules of import/export of goods of the country of arrival/departure. For example, on the territory Russian Federation it is allowed to carry no more than 2 liters of alcoholic products and 2 packs of cigarettes purchased in the duty-free zone. Similar requirements are established on the territory of Ukraine.

Important! If a passenger is flying on connecting flights, he/she additionally goes through the control procedure. Items purchased from Duty Free are already considered personal items. The ban on transporting a certain amount of alcohol or cigarettes may be lifted.

Receipts must be kept for all products. At the same time, the goods are packed in special transparent bags.

If a passenger is traveling within the territory of the European Union, it is allowed to carry products from the duty-free zone in almost unlimited quantities. The main thing is that the weight of hand luggage does not exceed the established norms. You can take alcohol, gels, perfumes and more with you. All products are also packed in transparent bags. It is forbidden to open them during the flight.

Must be remembered! If the government of the country of departure has not established restrictions on the transportation of products from Duty Free, they may operate on the territory of the country of arrival.

To avoid penalties, you must first familiarize yourself with the customs regulations.

Rules for the transport of liquids

This category includes perfumes, gels, canned food, caviar and other products. It is allowed to carry them into the cabin of the aircraft only in certain packaging. Liquids must be in containers with a volume of no more than 100 ml. Their total volume cannot exceed 1 liter per passenger.

Ready containers with liquids are packed in a bag. Its size does not exceed 20 × 20 cm. Accordingly, one passenger can have only one such package in hand luggage.

is a question that interests passengers of many airlines. People do not always understand what belongs to this category of baggage, what things can be taken into the cabin, and what is better to leave at home or check in with regular cargo.

What is the essence?

First, let's look at what is considered hand luggage on an airplane. This is a special type of baggage that is allowed to be taken into the cabin of an airliner. For him, his own rules and norms of transportation are established, and depending on the rules of the airline. For example, economy class passengers get one seat, while business class and 1st class passengers get twice as much.

It is believed that the equivalent of one piece is a bag or backpack containing personal items. This is wrong. The main criterion is the weight of hand luggage and its dimensions. It is from these parameters that the carrier is repelled. There are a number of restrictions on such baggage, which may vary.

General prohibitions

Before checking in for a flight, it is important to be clear about what you cannot take on a plane. Speaking in general, the category of prohibited goods includes weapons, liquefied gases, as well as dangerous substances (radioactive, toxic, caustic). The category of prohibited items also includes explosives, liquefied gases, sharp objects, including household appliances such as wire cutters, a corkscrew, scissors, a folding knife, and others.

Below we will consider in detail what you can take in hand luggage on an airplane, and what things are prohibited in relation to food, cosmetics, medicines, digital equipment and other cargo.

Food

First, let's look at what is allowed to carry from food. As a rule, airlines restrict passengers in this matter, prohibiting the carrying of jelly-like and liquid food. But you can take with you:

  • Nuts.
  • Fruits.
  • Sandwiches.
  • Cookie.
  • Chips and other products.

If you are flying with a child, you are allowed to take baby food. If jelly, juices or yoghurts are found before departure, they will most likely be banned from being transported. This also applies to food that is packaged in jars. Those products that are allowed to be carried on board are recommended to be packed in transparent bags, which speeds up the inspection procedure.

Before departure, pay attention to the requirement of the carrier, because they may vary. Pay special attention to goods from DutyFree stores. They are allowed to be taken on a plane, but only if they are packaged in a bag and have a receipt on hand.

Cosmetical tools

Women are often interested in what they can take with them. from cosmetics. As a rule, carriers are allowed to bring into the cabin:

  • Blush.
  • Eyeliner.
  • Shadows.
  • Powder and other means.

As for jelly-like formulations, as well as liquids that are packed in containers larger than 0.1 liters, it is forbidden to take them with you. The only option is to transfer the items to checked baggage. In addition, pressurized cans are not allowed into the cabin. In this case, the total volume of liquids carried should not exceed 1000 ml. This nuance should be taken into account even before departure.

medical supplies

Another important issue is medications. You are allowed to take the following medicines as hand luggage:

  • Pills.
  • Hydrogen peroxide.
  • Dressing materials.
  • Various drops.

All funds should be sealed and carried with instructions for use. Otherwise, customs officers may have questions for the passenger, up to the need for a detailed inspection. If there is an injury, hand luggage can be supplemented with special means for movement, for example, crutches. With regard to the upper limit of liquids, the same rules apply here as mentioned above.

Digital equipment

According to the rules of air carriers, you can take digital equipment on board the aircraft - a laptop, player, tablet, camera, charger and even a hairdryer. But there is a limitation regarding the mobile phone. It can be carried into the cabin, but with a mandatory shutdown. This is due to safety, because the radiation from mobile devices may interfere with aircraft electronics.

If you plan to carry large equipment that exceeds the allowable dimensions, it is better to check it out as regular baggage.

What about documents and jewelry?

According to the rules of airlines, it is allowed to take valuables, jewelry, wallets and important documents with you in your hand luggage. It is also necessary to take your passport with you so as not to accidentally end up in a foreign country without documents. There are situations when luggage does not fit on one plane and then it can be sent on the next flight.

Clothing and personal hygiene items

If we consider personal hygiene items, you can take a toothbrush and paste, a comb (without a handle), wet wipes and even nail polish remover on board the aircraft. At the same time, it is forbidden to take cutting and piercing things into the salon. This rule also applies to nail scissors.

From clothes you can take with you a coat, a jacket (sweater), an umbrella, a blanket and a shawl. In general, it is allowed to take almost all clothes, if it does not contradict the rules of the airline and does not exceed the allowable standards (dimensions, weight).

What are the weight and size restrictions?

Separate question - how much hand luggage can i take on a plane. Here, each airline has its own rules, which depend on the direction, ticket price, flight class and other factors. There are only two main criteria, namely dimensions and weight:

  • Dimensions. They should not exceed 56 cm in length, 46 cm in height, and 25 cm in width.
  • Weight. Here the requirements are different, and various airlines restrictions can be between 3 and 15 kg.

Results

Despite a certain similarity in the requirements of air carriers regarding hand luggage, some rules are strictly individual. For example, low-cost airlines that provide budget flights are stricter about hand luggage and allow you to take a minimum of things with you into the cabin. No more than one seat is allowed per person. More established companies will have fewer restrictions. In any case, it is important to clarify these points in advance, even before buying a ticket and checking in for a flight.

hand luggage(English hand luggage, or cabin baggage) - luggage that a passenger can take with him on board the aircraft. Depending on the type of ticket, the rules of most airlines set the following restrictions on the number of pieces of hand luggage for one passenger:

  • economy class - one piece of hand luggage;
  • business class - two pieces of hand luggage;
  • first class - two pieces of hand luggage.

The equivalent of a piece of hand luggage is not at all one single bag with personal belongings. In fact, there may be two, or even three. The main thing is that all of them do not exceed the dimensions and weight of hand luggage, which are established by each airline. separately. As a rule, the most stringent restrictions (on dimensions and weight) apply to low-cost carriers. They most zealously monitor the compliance of the parameters of hand luggage with the permissible values.

Attention! To control the size and weight of hand luggage at airports, there are always scales and a special form for checking dimensions.

If the hand luggage exceeds the norm, you can try to put some of the things in your pockets - the passenger's outerwear, including the contents of the pockets, is not regulated in any way by the rules. Therefore, for those who plan to travel a lot, it may be worth considering buying a separate jacket with many regular pockets. And for the most shameless tourists who are ready to abuse such an omission in the rules, the SCOTTeVEST brand produces special jackets, raincoats and jackets with big amount pockets.

What to take in hand luggage

  • documentation;
  • fragile items;
  • things of material value (laptop, camera, phone, video camera);
  • essentials (hygiene products, medicines, special food).

Prudent passengers always take into account the fact that the main luggage, which is handed over at check-in, may be lost. Of course, sooner or later they will find it and return it safe and sound, but for some time you will still have to do without things that may be necessary. To ensure that this situation does not affect your trip or trip in any way, be sure to carry all the most important things with you in your hand luggage.

  • weapons, as well as devices or toys that imitate them;
  • household chemicals, especially explosive, flammable and toxic substances (acetone, hairspray);
  • pointed, piercing and cutting objects (nail scissors, nail file, knitting needles, corkscrew);
  • razors and shaving blades (with the exception of mechanical safety razors or closed-blade disposable razors).

Rules for carrying liquids in hand luggage

It is the restrictions on the carriage of liquids in hand luggage that most often become the main surprise for a respectable passenger. If the fact that it is forbidden to take with you sharp objects or a lighter in the form of a gun is obvious to any sane person, then the ban on a large package of your favorite perfume or Swiss cheese comes as an unexpected surprise for many, which soon turns into a serious chagrin, as they have to be thrown into an ordinary trash can. The fact is that since 2006 there have been serious prohibitions on the presence of liquids in hand luggage. This measure was introduced due to repeated attempts by terrorists to smuggle individual components of explosive devices under their guise.

In the category of "liquid" fall:

  • cosmetics and toilet products (perfumes, shampoos, gels, lotions, sprays, oils, paints, creams, deodorants, shaving foams, mascara, lipstick and toothpaste);
  • products (drinks, syrups, soups, cheeses, canned food, caviar, jam, homemade preparations).

All "liquids" the passenger must put in one transparent lockable plastic bag 20 × 20 cm in size. It is better to buy it in advance, since at the airport the price for a package is usually not less than one dollar / euro. The total volume of "liquids" in the package (together with the packages in which they are located) should not exceed 1 liter, and the volume of each individual (again, taking into account the packaging) should be within 100 ml. Any passenger is allowed to have only one similar package. If the content of such does not meet all the requirements, then part of the latter will simply have to be thrown away.

Attention! Baby food, dietary products and medications (if you have a prescription or a certificate from a doctor) that you may need during the flight do not need to be placed in a plastic bag. Be prepared for security personnel to ask you to open the baby food and sample the contents.

Carrying food in hand luggage

Hand luggage rules do not prohibit passengers from taking on board an aircraft food products. However, on international flights this should be done taking into account the veterinary and phytosanitary types of control at the customs border. For example, products of animal origin can only be imported into Russia in finished form and in original packaging. The import of plant products depends on the degree of phytosanitary risk (high and low).

If you are going to have a snack during the flight, opt for sandwiches or fruit, and for sweets, take chocolate or sweets. However, avoid foods that crumble (such as cookies) or have a strong pungent odor. In addition, do not forget that some products, such as soft cheese, yogurt or caviar, are considered liquids, so the volume of each of them should not exceed 100 ml.

Accessory for hand luggage

Many (but not all) airlines provide passengers with additional service under the name "accessory for hand luggage" (English personal item). Can be used as an accessory one of the following items:

  • handbag;
  • men's briefcase;
  • diplomat;
  • laptop;
  • tablet;
  • camcorder;
  • camera.

Maximum allowable accessory dimensions different airlines also differ. They usually make up 40×30×10 cm. For other carriers, the dimensions may vary slightly - plus or minus 1–5 cm to each side. Accessory weight is rarely limited.

The above list of personal items that fall under the definition of an accessory is standard. Some airlines expand it with the following items:

  • umbrella;
  • cane;
  • folder for papers;
  • a bouquet of fresh (cut) flowers;
  • printed publications for reading in flight.

Important! According to the rules of almost all airlines, during the flight, the accessory must be placed under the seat of the seat in front of you, and hand luggage - on the shelf above.

Many low-cost airlines provide the “hand luggage accessory” service for a fee or only for owners of their premium cards.

Carrying a bag

Some airlines, in a separate paragraph of the rules, regulate the conditions for transporting a suitcase (a travel case for suits and other sets of clothes, usually folded in half; things in it do not wrinkle and retain their shape). The fact is that suitcases (if the clothes in them are folded 2 times, and not 3-4 times), although not significantly, but exceed the allowable dimensions of hand luggage. Some airlines have introduced separate maximum dimensions for carry-on bags and allowed them to be taken on board the aircraft instead of hand luggage. Others have included portlets in the list of personal items that can be taken as an additional accessory to hand luggage. However, there are also some airlines that do not separate carry-on bags from general baggage, which means they have to comply with the standard carry-on size.

Duty Free items in hand luggage

As a rule, there are no restrictions on selling goods to tourists in Duty Free stores, but this does not mean that you should buy everything your heart desires. You will have to face the restrictions a little later, because upon arrival in the country of destination Duty goods Free are subject to the law on duties on the import of alcohol and tobacco products if they exceed the established limit (in the Russian Federation and Ukraine it is 2 liters of alcohol and 2 blocks of cigarettes).

Goods Duty Free

The situation is slightly different for passengers whose flight includes a transfer or connecting flight. The fact is that they will have to go through another security control procedure, which means that Duty Free goods will already become part of personal belongings, which must still correspond to the size and weight of hand luggage. In addition, so that drinks from Duty Free do not fall under the strict rules for transporting liquids, they must be packed in a transparent resealable bag even in the store (sometimes you will have to pay extra for it); you should also keep the cash receipt (only it confirms that the purchase was made at the airport of the first departure).

Hand luggage for children

If a passenger is traveling with a small child, whose age does not exceed two years (that is, he is not provided with a separate seat in the aircraft cabin), extra bed carry-on luggage of a standard size, but slightly less weight. As a rule, this is enough to put together all the baby's toiletries, necessary clothes, toys and special food (in this case, baby food does not fall into the category of "liquid").

For a passenger with a child, it is allowed to replace their place (not for children) in hand luggage with a pram or a portable cradle (provided that they fold and can fit in the compartment above the seats).

How to carry hand luggage on board an aircraft

Hand luggage must be placed on the shelf, which is located directly above the passenger seat. If there is one or more heavy objects in it, then for safety reasons the passenger is obliged to select them and place them under the seat of the chair located in front of him. It is strictly forbidden to leave hand luggage directly at emergency exit or in the aisle of the aircraft cabin.

Attention! If you have a non-standard question about an upcoming flight, then it is best to ask your airline representatives (by calling the hotline or by e-mail). Keep in mind that rules may vary from airline to airline.
