Keszthely guide - everything you need in one place. Open left menu keszthely city of keszthely hungary

Traveling to Hungary without travel agencies allowed me to see such bright sights of Keszthely as the Festetics Palace, the town hall and the cathedral, find out where you can eat cheaply in Keszthely and what kind of shopping is there; for more details, read the story about the trip to Keszthely

A popular sign says that if the weather deteriorates after a few sunny days, then the weekend has come. In our case, the situation was exactly one to one, only it was not on Saturday or Sunday: according to the travel plan, it was necessary to spend some time in blissful doing nothing, finding out if the rest at Balaton was good ...

And it had to happen that instead of sitting on the beach surrounded by a picturesque landscape, we had to get wet in the rain all day ...

It all started from Buk, where we stopped for the night. The rain spoiled our trip to this small but popular Hungarian spa resort, and although the planned visit to Szombathely still took place, despite the bad weather, we simply could not force ourselves to get out of the car in the downpour in Zalaegerszeg. I had to spit on exploring the city and go into the arms of a sweet couple Heviz-Kesthely. The two towns are located literally side by side, their extreme houses stand a kilometer apart from each other. Therefore, when choosing where it is better to stay, in Keszthely or in Heviz, I considered them as a whole. The result of the search was a luxurious three-room apartment with a balcony on the second floor of one of the local villas, offered for a ridiculous price of 22 euros.

Sadly, I didn’t rejoice for long: already on the way I received a message about the cancellation of the reservation - something didn’t work out there. I had to think again where to live, and now the choice fell on Heviz with an option of 24 euros. Looking ahead, I’ll say that it’s not at all necessary to book accommodation in the low season: apartments in Heviz and Keszthely are rented out in bundles, “kiadó” signs, as “rental” is written in Hungarian, are posted by almost every first house.

So, shamefully retreating and not seeing the sights of Zalaegerszeg, we arrived at the most famous spa resort in Hungary with the hope of changing clothes, warming up and, of course, drinking tea. The greater was our disappointment when we found out that the room was not yet ready for us, and the owner's wife, who was in charge of the household department, would arrive only in the late afternoon. In addition, the Hungarian who met us did not speak English at all, we managed to communicate with him only with the help of a Google translator.

At this point, things have stalled for now, and postponing our acquaintance with the surroundings until better times, we decided to get from Heviz to Keszthely to unwind and refresh ourselves.

The journey took only a few minutes, which cannot be said when looking for parking in Keszthely. We stumbled a couple of times near the shops, but it immediately turned out that there was nothing interesting around, and where the main sights of Keszthely were located, it was impossible to leave the car. Finally, I found a free spot on the main street of Kossuth Lajos; if we make a route from the main square of the city to the Balaton Museum, then we got up just about halfway. At the same time, we were immediately pleased with the presence of two cafes where you could eat inexpensively, and this is in the center of Keszthely!

The city tour, like in Szombathely, had to be carried out under periodically drizzling rain, which greatly spoiled our impressions: even when the water was turned off upstairs, the sky still remained gray ... And we really wanted to see the elegant Hungarian resort in the sunlight ...

The history of Keszthely dates back to antiquity. The Roman colonists, who mastered Pannonia, settled down on the banks of the Balaton seriously and for a long time. Under the cover of the fortress of Valkum, built under Emperor Constantine II, they managed to stay in place even after the legions left the Danube limes. It was not until the 6th century that the last traces of Roman rule were swept away by the Lombards.

The Middle Ages became a time of trials for the city. He was never able to reach the former level of prosperity, but partly restored the economy after the creation of a centralized Kingdom of Hungary. For some reason, local residents received a valuable privilege from the rulers of the state - permission to hold fairs, and disposed of the chance as they should. By the end of the 14th century, Keszthely had become largest center trade of the region.

The period of prosperity of the townspeople was interrupted by the invasion of the Turks. Although, unlike Eger, Gyor, Budapest and others major cities The Ottomans did not capture Hungary, Keszthely, the trade relations they undermined put an end to the country's economy.

But even here Fortune smiled at the city, albeit not immediately: in the 18th century, the influential Festetics family of magnates undertook to dispose of the surroundings. The aristocrats, who had colossal means, began to build a luxurious estate near Lake Balaton, which required many artisans and servants. Thanks to this, by the end of the century, the number of inhabitants of Keszthely exceeded four thousand people.

In the 19th century, the history of Keszthely took a new turn: outdoor recreation, which became fashionable among wealthy Europeans, gave the city the opportunity to turn itself into a resort. For several decades, the building was supplemented by a number of luxury hotels and countless villas. Since then, Keszthely has stood apart: all the resorts on the Balaton are good in their own way, but it definitely stands out from the crowd.

One could already judge how good the city was by the first steps that we took on the central Fo ter square. Our attention was immediately drawn to the imposing town hall of Keszthely, built in 1769 by the architect Christoph Hofstader. In fact, he built a chic late baroque palace, and the city authorities got hold of the building much later, in 1930. It took another five years to adapt the interior for administrative needs, and even then there was not enough space for everyone: in 1985, the builders added two side wings to the town hall, significantly increasing its size.

There are two more sights of Keszthely next to the bureaucrat's nest. In front of the town hall, Count György Festetics sits thoughtfully, having invested huge amounts of money in the construction of the family estate and the transformation of the surrounding area. And on the side of it rises a Gothic-looking church, built over 620 years ago. In the last quarter of the 19th century, a neo-Gothic tower was added to it, which, although it distorted the historical appearance of the temple, somewhat softened its medieval gloominess.

A little later, having walked about two hundred meters from the main square to the north, we went to the next sight of Keszthely, the old town hall. You can recognize the building in an eclectic style by the coat of arms of the Festetics family fortified on the facade. The golden heraldic lion recalls the heroic struggle of the Hungarians against the Turkish invasion, the ships represent a close relationship with Balaton and further in the same spirit. It is also worth paying attention to the baroque plague column installed in front of the town hall.

If there were several cafes in that part of Kossuth Lajos street, which is located south of Fo ter, then to the north, catering establishments stood literally in rows, and we quickly looked at a couple of places where you can eat cheaply in Kosthely. In one of the restaurants, complex dinners were generally served for 2000 forints, and we ate hot meals with pleasure. The soup turned out to be so-so, juicy meat with a side dish pleased us, the dessert finally lifted our spirits. And since the cook and the waitress were efficient, we finished the meal in less than three-quarters of an hour. There was still plenty of time to see the sights of Keszthely.

The next object on excursion route became a local synagogue, distinguished by an unusual appearance. Remembering the Moorish-style Jewish temple of Szombatheya, I could not believe for a long time that the Jews popular resort decided to build something like this. The building of a typical neoclassical look was erected by the community in the middle of the 19th century. Why it is necessary to give the synagogue the appearance of a museum remains unknown ...

In addition to those already listed interesting places Kossuth Lajos is home to other sights of Keszthely, including the erotic museum, the doll museum, which contains about 700 toys from different eras, and the Horrarium, a kind of torture museum in which, with the help of wax figures recreated scenes of executions and interrogations. Each of these popular attractions was worth a visit, but we were in a hurry to see the local gem, the Festetics Palace, until it started to rain - this threat hung over us all the time like a natural sword of Damocles.

The ensemble in the Baroque style was taking shape for a long time: Count Christoph Festetics ordered in 1745, and the last design details took their place shortly before the beginning of the 20th century. Significant changes affected the most popular attraction of Keszthely at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries: then, for the construction of a new wing to accommodate an extensive library, architect Andreas Fischer, by the way, a member of the Vienna Academy, specially arrived from the capital. Naturally, he did not himself vouchsafed to travel, he was invited by the already mentioned Gyorgy Festetich. By the way, pay attention to the monument in honor of this gentleman standing in front of the front facade.

Since the complex did not share the fate of many ancient objects cultural heritage Hungary, destroyed during the Second World War, an authentic atmosphere has been preserved inside. Judging by the photographs, the interiors are very good, and if the opening hours of the Festetics Palace did not change depending on the season, we would certainly stop by to take a look at how the rococo-style rooms look like. Alas, only in summer visitors are allowed until half past five, and in spring the entrance closes even earlier. I had to limit myself to an external inspection of the buildings, and a walk in an elegant park. The surrounding area looks great for a year, and the reconstruction, which started in the winter of 2015, has not yet ended. With the allocated funds, the Hungarians expect to recreate the pond, fountains, pavilions and generally give the park the look in the Victorian style that it had in the 19th century.

What else you can see in Keszthely is Helikon Park. The largest recreation area of the resort arose on the site of a grove that once belonged to the same Festetics. After the First World War, experienced gardeners cultivated the landscape, laying paths and planting many trees, including plane trees, oaks, chestnuts, and even specially brought cypresses that successfully took root on Hungarian soil. The border of the green massif runs almost right next to lakeside so you can combine a walk with sunbathing in summer. The beaches of Keszthely are small in number - in addition to this, Helikon, there are also Varosha and Libas - so you need to use the opportunities that are. But if I were planning a vacation at Balaton in the summer, I would choose the vicinity of Balatonfured or Siofok. The coast is long, but in fact you can swim in Balaton far from everywhere, and the conditions on wild nature not at all those that provide paid beaches of the same Keszthely or Siofok - a fee of 1.5-2 euros per day for the right to use the resort infrastructure is not so great to save on your own comfort.

And, finishing the conversation about the sights of Keszthely, I finally recommend getting to the Church of St. Teresa, standing on Tapolcai Street. The building does not have an ancient history, nothing can be said here, but the talented architect Bruno Bruchweiser designed it in the neo-Romanesque style, which made his offspring damn pretty. You can get to the church, which has recently become a basilica, along a straight path almost from the gates of the Festetics Palace, since it takes less than 10 minutes to walk there.

The tour of Keszthely, although it took place in cloudy weather, came out informative and left a pleasant impression. As we later found out, both Heviz and Siofok, despite all the attempts, cannot compare with the westernmost resort of Balaton. Oh, I wish we could walk in the sun, I think I could just fall in love with the town ...

The main attraction of the Hungarian city of Kehstey is the palace of the Festetics family. This is one of the largest and most luxurious Hungarian estates that have come down to our time. The palace was built in the 18th century and belonged to the Festetic family of the same name. This family is known throughout Europe for its charitable work. It was thanks to this family that the first gymnasium, a hospital, pharmacies and an agricultural lyceum were opened in the city. The palace is surrounded by a chic park, decorated in the English style. In total, there are 101 halls on the territory of the museum, some of which regularly host various conferences, while others house the exposition of the weapons museum and the library. Not a single tourist bypasses the museum library, as it contains a unique collection of books, including engravings by medieval artists, the first printed books, autographed sheet music by famous composers and other unique exhibits.

In its architecture, this palace resembles the most best palaces that time. It is distinguished by a beautiful facade and luxurious interior decoration with frescoes, carvings, gilding and other elements.

From June 1 to August 31, this palace complex is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the rest of the time from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Monday is a closed day). Admission ticket costs 3,500 HUF, and for visitors under 26 years old, half as much.

Several interesting objects can be observed on the main square of the city Fő tér. As early as 1170, a column of the Holy Trinity was built in the center of this square. Also on this square is the building of the city hall, which was built in the Baroque style in the 18th century. Now in this building there is a city cultural center, which everyone can visit. Another attraction located on the square is the Franciscan church. It was originally built in 1386 in the Gothic style, but subsequently rebuilt several times, and last changes were introduced in 1880, when a bell tower was attached to it. This church is of particular interest to tourists because it contains the largest collection of Gothic frescoes in Hungary.

Kehstey is very interesting city in every way. Tourists who come to this place have the opportunity to see not only the standard, but also some relatively unusual sights and places that are difficult to see in other cities. One such place is the Museum of Horrors. Visiting this museum is not recommended for people with a weak psyche, and everyone else will be able to see and learn a lot of interesting things. The collection of exhibits of this museum demonstrates the centuries-old history of torture and punishment, which in the Middle Ages were popular and welcomed not only in Asia, but also in European countries(you can see some types of tools used in modern torture). Inside the museum are a variety of tools with which the executioners in different time executed criminals (and not only criminals) in Japan, Hungary and France. A large number of exhibits are presented in the form of wax figures. One of the main highlights of the museum is the electric chair.

Part of the museum exhibition is dedicated to Count Dracula, which is not surprising, since the meaning of the latter's life was directly related to executions, torture and other abuses. If you decide to visit this museum, then pay attention to the exposition, which is dedicated to Countess Erzsebet Bathory, who deliberately killed the girls, and then fed on their blood, being sure that in this way she prolongs her youth.

Lake Balaton is rightfully considered the main natural attraction of Hungary, therefore, being in Kechstey, it is simply impossible not to look into the museum of the same name of this lake. By visiting it, you can learn about the history of one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe. Museum exhibits talk about the features of the local natural and flora. Among the exhibits of the museum you can see various archaeological finds, household items, weapons and other exhibits that tell about the history of the inhabitants of the cities of Kehstey, its culture, customs, etc. The age of the most ancient exhibits is about six thousand years.

There are several other interesting museums in the city, a visit to which will give you a lot of pleasant impressions. In 2008, a hunting museum was opened, which presents more than 200 species of various animals (in their natural habitat). In the doll museum, opened in 2010, visitors can see a huge collection of dolls from different historical eras, which are dressed in national costumes.

Flea about Dobogomajor

“Uh, finally. We arrived and settled. We went for a walk around the area.

The air is delicious. Warm.

Mostly cats live here. There are even special houses for them.

Flowers are blooming everywhere.

We must look around. It's probably good here."

Dog in Dobogomayor

Bloshik liked it in Dobogomajor, we didn't really like it. We were given some kind of used apartment, apparently because a dog was declared with us. Our dwelling turned out to be spacious, two-level (bedroom on the top floor), but the furniture was old, everything was shabby. And this is despite the fact that we paid extra 10 euros for Bloshik every day!

As a result, everything on the territory is beautiful, in our room not very much.

The dog in the Abadziya club. Keszthely

At the next resort, we decided not to advertise Bloshik. After spending 7 days in the city of Heviz in Dobogomajor, we moved to Keszthely, to the Abadzia club. In advance, they asked for a beautiful room. And the Flea is small, we decided, we will take him out for a walk in a chest carrier. Nobody will notice.

They gave us the most beautiful apartment. But when it came time to check out, the reception asked point-blank:
Did you have a small dog with you?
Tracked down, that is. Nothing to do, I had to pay here.
Thus, Bloshik's stay in the resorts of Hungary cost us 150 euros.

Keszthely and Baron Festetics

Great contribution to development south coast Balaton was introduced by the local oligarch Baron Festetics. (Festetics Gyorgy, 18th century). I recommend looking at the details on the website: https://www.tourister.ru/world/europe/hungary/city/kheviz/castles/17229

Most of the time the baron probably spent at the court of Maria Theresa in Vienna, but he did not forget his native places.
In the south of Lake Balaton stands the town of Keszthely. It has a thousand year history. Archaeologists have unearthed Roman baths in its vicinity. In the 14th century, the Hungarians built a Christian Franciscan church here, which still stands today. The Mongol hordes came here with robberies. And later these places were captured by the Ottoman Turks.
Festetics already lived in more enlightened times, when the great Habsburgs freed the Christian brothers from Muslim oppression, included Hungary in their possessions, and Austria-Hungary turned out to be.
In Keszthely, Festetics began to build a manor. Yes, such that Maria Theresa would not be ashamed to accept it. Real palace.

Thanks to Festetić's investment, the town's population got jobs and quadrupled.
His estate has now become a museum. By the way, that's where.
And Festetić himself remained in the memory of the city. They put him, or rather “planted”, a bronze statue in the main square. We all took turns taking pictures with him.

- Flea, do you also want to bark your weighty dog word?
- Woof!

Bloshik says. Dog in Keszthely

“There used to be a good owner Festetics in this city. He built a large house with a garden and stables. Previously, many hunting and guard dogs lived in the house and in the wide courtyard, there were horses, and large chickens - peacocks - walked around the park. Inhospitable people have now settled in the house, who did not like that I ran across the grass, smelled the flowers and left my Business Cards, conveying greetings to local dogs from relatives from Russia. My mother was sent away with me.
But Festetics himself is not to blame for this, he is now sitting frozen on a bench on main street city, so I'll take a picture with him as a keepsake. The park near his house is just wonderful, even the water in the pond is delicious.”

Lake Heviz

The biggest attraction in the south of Balaton is Lake Heviz. There are many stories about him on the net, I will not repeat myself, I will refer to the website of the Filatkin family. Details about water, treatment and other tricks of staying on Lake Heviz are described in the third part of the cycle “Small Towns and Dogs of Europe”.
They say that earlier, when there were many animals in the forest, wounded deer and wild boars went to the lake to heal their wounds. The ubiquitous Romans built baths on the lake and enjoyed healing properties water. But for a long time this place was hard to reach. Low swampy banks, swamps, trees grew and fell, forming impenetrable blockages. The same Baron Festetich dealt with all this. Gathered the peasants, inspired, financed. The lake was formed into solid shores, swamps were driven into irrigation canals, and park trees were planted. Since then Lake Heviz and Small town around it is a European balneological resort.
Now let's look at Heviz through the eyes of Bloshik.

“My hosts used to go to this place every day. Their skin then smelled of something ... so soft and silvery velvet ... And the air around this place is all saturated with such a spicy strong smell. Even the fog is standing. What's there? I think it smells like water. It should taste salty. Warm to the touch. There is a lot of this water. And every day many, many owners go to this water. They climb into it and sit for a long time, probably warming themselves. Local dogs don't go there."

Private sightseeing in Hungary

There is more than enough information about the sights of Hungary on the net. I won't state the obvious. I just want to draw attention to what surprised me, caught my eye.

Ivy in Hungarian parks

Monuments Keszthely

It was striking that in the town of Keszthely there are a lot of monuments and memorial plaques on the houses. Did so many great people of Hungary live here?

Or maybe rest? Or maybe just in every house they honor the founder of the clan? The pioneer who built this house?
In Keszthely, we lived on Erzbeta Kiralyn Street (Erzsebet Kiralyne, 1837-1898, Sisi).
The Sisi monument stands right on the Balaton embankment. Since Elisabeth (aka the famous Princess Sisi, wife of Franz Joseph, the last Habsburg emperor) was a dog lover, Bloshik wanted to take a picture with her.

Lake Balaton. Swans

Swans greeted us at Balaton. There are many swans, they are very beautiful.
But their character is bad. The swans are persistently begging for food, and we specially brought bread for them.

But when they wanted to communicate with them closer, the swans with might and main began to hiss and almost bite.
Swans also quarrel among themselves. One was driven out, expelled from his company for something, and then he sailed with us all alone.

How not to remember the "ugly duckling"?

Castles of Hungary

In Europe there are many medieval castles. They also exist in Hungary, we were told.
But the first castle disappointed us. It was the fortress of Szigliget. We diligently climbed the mountain, paying 600 forints (20 €) each. But at the top there were only a couple of destroyed walls, several cannons, three restored rooms. One of them is a church.
“Fortresses built by the Hungarians for defense against the Mongols and Turks were ordered to be demolished by the Habsburgs in order to avoid national liberation uprisings,” we read in the annotation. – Some castles are now specially restored for tourists.
“Well, no, no,” we decided, and, having admired the Balaton from the mountain, we did not look for the fortress anymore.

Tapolca

But in the town of Tapolca there is a super attraction. underground cave

with a whole labyrinth of lakes and channels through which you can sail on a boat.

All grottoes of the cave are beautifully illuminated. It is a perfectly safe well designed area.

But the cave itself extends both deep and down, so those who wish can participate in special excursions with speleologists.
More information about Tapolca can be found here:
https://www.tourister.ru/world/europe/hungary/city/tapolca

City of Keszthely(Keszthely) is located 160 km southwest of Budapest, on the shores of Lake Balaton. The population of the city is about 22,000 people.

Keszthely is the largest and oldest city on the lake.

History of Keszthely

Already at the beginning of our era, Roman settlements existed in these places. Not far from the city, archaeologists discovered the remains of a fortified Roman military camp dating back to the 2nd-4th centuries.

The first mention of the city dates back to 1247. At the beginning of the 15th century, Keszthely received city rights. The Franciscan church, built in 1386, has survived to this day.

In the 16th century, Keszthely, like all Hungarian cities, was subjected to Turkish invasion, as a result of which the city suffered. And in the 18th century, after the expulsion of the Turks, large-scale construction of mansions and churches began in Keszthely. In 1745, the palace of the Festetics family was built, which is the main attraction of the city.

Attractions of Keszthely:

The beaches of Keszthely and surroundings

All Keszthely beaches are paid, but with good infrastructure. If you wish, you can get through for free or find a wild area outside the official beaches. Almost everywhere it is quite shallow, and the water is cloudy due to silt and mineral impurities.

There are three beaches on the shores of Lake Balaton in Keszthely.

City Beach

The city beach (Városi Strand) occupies the central part of the bay, it is most convenient to get here - right behind the park there is Train Station. IN last years it was renovated, new toilets and cabins were built, children's and sports grounds (volleyball, basketball, football, badminton) were opened. Several cafes and rental of beach and water equipment are also available.

The beach is open from 8:30 to 19:00 from May 1 to September 15. The entrance price for adults is 800 forints, for children - 560 forints.

Helikon beach

Helikon Strand Beach is located to the right of the City Beach, if you face the lake. Suitable for families with children who come to Keszthely. It is not deep here, there are cafes and restaurants nearby, there is free parking and all the necessary infrastructure. Entrance is 500 forints for adults and 350 forints for children. Working hours are the same. After 19:00 you can swim for free.

Libash beach

Libás Strand beach is the most new beach the city of Keszthely (Hungary), is located in the north quite far from transport stops. The easiest way to get here is by car or bicycle. Near the harbor, many yachts and boats. Young people like to relax on Libas, in the evening and at night they often arrange shows and discos. There is only one Hungarian restaurant nearby. The beach is open from June 1 to September 15, the opening hours are similar to the other two. The entrance is like on Helikon.

Tompos Etterem

  • Address: Pázmany Peter u. 56.
  • Website: tomposetterem.hu/.
  • Is there a Russian menu: no.
  • Payment by cards: yes.
  • Service fee: no.

Restaurant Tomposh is located in a quiet residential area on the outskirts of Keszthely. But I recommend that you definitely get to it at least once. Then you yourself will want to return to it. On the menu you will find both Hungarian cuisine and dishes from other cuisines. There is a good selection of vegetarian dishes. The restaurant is also suitable for those who adhere to the paleo diet.

Pleasant interior, a veranda is open in summer, there is a children's corner, its own parking, parking for bicycles.

For lunch, a two-course business lunch is served from 11:30 to 15:00. The price is 1,300 forints.

From the usual menu, I recommend trying the duck, the rest of the meat is also cooked perfectly. For vegetarians, I advise you to take zucchini patties stuffed with camembert cheese with green pea puree (cukkini fasírt camembert sajtos zöldborsópürével). Delicious!

Jobarat Vendeglo

  • Address: Martinovics utca 1.
  • Website: www.jobaratvendeglo.hu
  • Opening hours: daily from 11:00 to 22:00.
  • Is there a Russian menu: yes.
  • Payment by cards: yes.
  • Service fee: no.

A popular restaurant in Keszthely, where it is sometimes difficult to find a free table. However, it is not located in the center of the city. In the summer the veranda works, inside it was only a glimpse - the interior is interesting.

The main feature of the restaurant is huge portions. Ordering two dishes for one person is not worth it here - you can hardly handle it. The menu is mainly Hungarian cuisine with all the consequences - meat and fat. True, there is no goulash in the soups section. Cooking is not satisfying, but not always tasty. I've been twice - the first was very good, the second - mediocre. Maybe it depends on the chef.

Los Amigos Bar & Grill

  • Address: Főter 2.
  • Website: losamigos-mex.hu
  • Opening hours: Wednesday-Sunday from 11:00 to 22:00.
  • Is there a Russian menu: yes.
  • Payment by cards: yes.
  • Service fee: no.

A Mexican restaurant in the very center of Keszthely - on the Main Square, which was opened by a Hungarian couple. Nachos, burritos, tacos, enchilados and more. Delicious, cheap, small portions. There is a children's menu. There is a terrace where it is great to sit in the summer.

Where to stay in Keszthely

By tradition, I will first talk about the places where I stayed. In Keszthely, if you do not take into account stops in Heviz, I lived twice. And both times it was the apartments that I recommend to you. Booked them through Airbnb. Don't forget the discount on your first booking.

The first apartment is located in the very center of Keszthely, its windows overlook the main pedestrian street, and the Festetics Castle is within easy reach. Here is a link to the ad. The apartment is bright, tastefully furnished, ideal for one or two people. There is free parking and pets are allowed. A great bonus to rent is two free bikes.
