Traveling to Greece by bus. Bus service in Greece

Intercity bus service in Greece rather unusually organized. Transportation between Greek cities are subordinate to the KTEL syndicate (KTEL), which is an association of joint-stock companies founded in each region of the country by private bus owners, but under state control in a single network. The activities of KTEL are regulated by Greek Laws Nos. 2119/1952, 102/1973 and 2163/2001. Thus, regional KTELs play by the same rules under state supervision, but are independent legal entities, and independently regulate bus transport to their regions. Those. KTEL of a certain region operates bus routes: a) within its region; b) to Athens and/or Thessaloniki; c) occasionally to the centers of neighboring regions.

Therefore, at the bus stations of Athens and Thessaloniki, where buses from all over the country gather, there is no single ticket office, but you need to look for the KTEL box office of that particular area Greece where you need to go. Accordingly, to board the bus, you must again look for the platform of the KTEL you need. It is not surprising that in big cities there may be several bus stations where KTELs of different regions are based.

For example, there are 3 bus stations in Athens:

  • basic KTEL at Kifisou Avenue 100 (serves all routes except the regions of Attica, Thessaly and Stereo Hellas)
  • KTEL on Liosion Street (serves the island of Euboea (Chalcis), the region of Phokis (Delphi), the region of Phthiotis (Lamia, Kamena Vourla), the region of Boeotia (Thebes, Arachova), the region of Magnesia (Volos), the region of Karditsa, the region of Larisa, the region of Trikala)
  • CTEL of Attica, which serves routes in the region of Attica, and also, together with KTEL Thessaloniki, provides a connection between the two Greek capitals

Please note that the X93 express bus from Athenian international airport passes through KTEL Liosion and KTEL Kifisu (terminus), but does not pass through KTEL Attiki.

There are 2 bus stations in Patras: KTEL Achaia and KTEL of the Etoloakarnania region, however, they are located next to each other and to the port.

A few years ago there were 6 or 7 different KTELs in Thessaloniki until they opened a common bus station KTEL "Macedonia" which is located in the north of the city. The bus station has a website in English with a convenient interactive map. Today, in Greece, this is actually the only modern bus station with the appropriate infrastructure and a high-quality informative website.

The bus station "Macedonia" connects with the Thessaloniki airport by bus routes No. 78 (express) and 78N (night, goes with all stops). Please note that the new bus station has united all bus companies under its roof, except KTEL Chalkidiki, which is located closer to the airport near the IKEA hypermarket. Travel from the airport by bus number 79 with a transfer to number 36 at the IKEA stop. KTEL "Macedonia" and KTEL Chalkidiki are interconnected by city bus route No. 45, which runs every 20 minutes.

By virtue of mountainous terrain Greece railway communication in the country is poorly developed, so the main burden of passenger traffic falls on the KTEL bus companies. The longest bus routes in Greece are operated by the KTEL of the Evros area: Alexandroupoli - Athens (850 km by land), as well as the KTEL of Heraklion in Crete: Heraklion - Thessaloniki and Ioannina (by ferry via Piraeus). Communication between major cities is quite frequent, bus depot Greek KTEL in last years noticeably younger, roads are also being updated. Therefore, traveling in a modern comfortable bus with air conditioning and tinted windows will not cause much trouble.

Old buses remained only on intra-regional routes. If you are planning a trip between sparsely populated areas, then be aware that there are no bus stations in the villages, buses stop there near caffeine (otherwise cafes), tickets can be purchased either from their owners right on the spot, or from conductors (in buses connecting big cities, no conductors). Buses run extremely infrequently on local routes, two or three times a day, so try to check in advance the bus departure time from the places you are going to include in your trip.

To avoid unnecessary trouble, bus ticket must be purchased in advance, at least 20 minutes, and be sure to keep in mind that Greek drivers often start off ahead of the time indicated in the schedule. It will also not be superfluous to clarify with the driver the final destination of the route, because the information on the waypoints of some flights may be incorrect. Upon departure, you can buy a return ticket with an open date. Unfortunately, the online ticketing system has only recently begun to be implemented. Therefore, not all regional KTELs of Greece can please with electronic ticket systems. Of course, you can book a Greek bus ticket in advance at all bus stations, but for this you need to personally appear at the KTEL ticket office. For orientation in prices for bus tickets: for example, at the beginning of 2016. bus ticket between Athens and Thessaloniki(distance 550 km) cost 43 euros, round trip 63 euros.

On big Greek islands you can buy comfortable Bus tours (both in KTEL itself and in local travel agencies), which will take you to a variety of historical and archaeological sites, beautiful beaches and other places of entertainment or active rest. Typically, such tours include all possible amenities plus guide services, and save you a lot of hassle when traveling between cities on your own.

Sometime in Greece There was a single KTEL website, but now only a list of websites and telephone numbers of regional bus stations can be found there. This situation arose after the events of 2006, when various telephone companies specializing in paid information illegally used bus site data to sell their services over the phone. Therefore, all information about schedules and prices from the KTEL website was removed.

Therefore, we tried to collect information about those regional KTELs that have their sites on the Internet. Unfortunately, not all bus companies in Greece have their own portals on the network and not all sites provide information on English language. In the latter cases, use electronic translators, such as the Google Language Toolbar. In general, the picture is that the more developed the region of Greece in tourism plan, the more likely that the local KTEL has a website in English.

In this article, we will take a closer look at issues related to buses in Athens, both in terms of connections within the city itself and trips outside of it. You will learn about city buses in Athens, airport express trains, the main bus stations of the city and how to find out which one you need and, finally, double-decker sightseeing buses, which are so popular among tourists.

Buses from Athens airport

There are several ways to get from Athens airport to the city and port of Piraeus, and we will go into more detail here. However, buses are perhaps the most accessible and convenient of them all.

The bus stop at the airport for travel to the city is located on the first floor of the main terminal - right behind doors 4 and 5. Even if you are flying to Athens for the first time, finding a stop will be easy.

If you are traveling from the city to the Airport, then the buses arrive on the second floor of the terminal - in the departure area. The stop is located about 20 meters from the entrance to the terminal.

Connects the city with the airport 4 express routes:

BusX95- the most popular route for those heading to the city center. It goes directly to the main square of Athens - Syntagma and runs at intervals of 10 to 30 minutes without interruption 24 hours a day. The one way trip takes about an hour.

BusX96- Express connecting the airport with the port of Piraeus. Like the X95, it runs 24 hours a day every 20-40 minutes. Flights are more frequent during the day, less often after midnight. If you need to get to the main port of Athens to your ship, then X96 is what you need.

The route runs along the embankment, so if your hotel is located in the areas of Voula, Vouliagmeni, Glyfada or Faliron, then take a closer look at this bus. The one-way journey on route X96 takes about 90 minutes.

BusX93 connects the airport with both main bus stations of the city, located on Kiffissou and Lliosson streets.

If Athens is just an intermediate stop for you, and then your path lies to other cities of Greece on the mainland (outside Attica), then the X93 is a better solution than the X95, since it will allow you to avoid unnecessary transfers.

Bus tickets from the airport can be bought at the box office right at the bus stop

The X93 bus stop at the airport is located at exit 5. The route schedule provides for flights about once every half an hour during the day and once an hour at night. The one way trip takes about an hour.

BusX97 goes to Elliniko metro station. This route is less popular among travelers and more used by the Greeks themselves. However, if your hotel is located in the Vouliagmeni or Voula areas, then you can also use it.

X97 buses depart from the airport from 06:05 to 23:00 approximately once an hour. One way trip takes 45 minutes.

For all express bus lines from the airport, a ticket costs 6 Euros for a one-way trip.

To pay for the fare, the ticket must be attached to the validator.

Tickets can be purchased at a kiosk at a bus stop at the airport itself, at bus stops in the city, metro stations and from the driver (if you didn’t get on the final one).

On the bus itself, the ticket must be attached to an electronic validator that acts as a composter.

Regional buses from the airport to the port of Rafina

In addition to express buses, flights from the regional capital operator Ktel Attikis also depart from the airport. They are more suitable for the Greeks living in the vicinity of the airport, and you do not need to worry about them.

The only important exception for those travelers who are on their way to the port of Rafina.

The route operates daily from 4:35 to 22:20, buses depart at intervals of about 40 minutes. The cost of a one-way ticket is 3 Euro. You can pay for the fare directly on the bus.

Bus stop marked in yellow

The regional bus stop is located opposite exit 3 of the terminal, but not directly next to it, as is the case with express trains, but about 100 meters [across the road] - at the Sofitel hotel.

From here you can also go to the port of Lavrion.

Please note that the colors of the regional buses differ from those of the express buses. Regional buses are painted orange.

Public transport buses in Athens

Athens has a lot of bus routes, and this, along with the metro, is one of the main modes of transport for the Athenians.

Most buses run from early morning until late at night. Round-the-clock schedules are the exception rather than the rule.

A single bus ticket costs 1.4 Euro and is valid for 90 minutes. There is also a daily pass (4.5 Euros) and a 5-day pass (9 Euros). Monthly subscriptions exist, but are rarely used by tourists.

Tickets for transport in Athens can be bought at street kiosks, metro ticket offices or vending machines at stations.

During the validity period of the ticket, it can be used not only on buses, but also on other types of public urban transport, except for trips to the airport.

For passengers from 7 to 18 years old and over 65 years old, there is a discount on transport, but it is applied only if they have a valid certificate. Tickets are bought at metro stations and Periptero kiosks, which are in abundance throughout the city.

When using a ticket for the first time, it must be validated by attaching it to a special validator. The countdown of the ticket validity period starts from the moment of composting.

Buses in Attica

At the beginning of the article, speaking about transport from the airport, we mentioned the regional buses of the Ktel Attikis operator and its routes to Rafina and Lavrion.

However, most flights within the Attica metropolitan area do not depart from the airport, but from the regional bus station in the city centre.

The bus station is located at Patision 68 - Kotsika 2 and serves about a dozen directions covering all major settlements in area.

Tickets can be bought on the spot before departure or on the bus itself - their price is quite loyal. For example, a one-way ticket from Athens to Sounio will cost about 7 Euros.

Please note that if you are on your way outside of Attica - to cities such as Patras, or, then Ktel Attikis will not help you, but you need one of the intercity bus stations, which will be discussed below.

You can learn more about Ktel Attikis regional buses.

Buses from Athens to Loutraki, Patras, Nafplio and other cities

If your goal in Greece is outside of Attica on the mainland, then in Athens there are 2 intercity bus stations specializing in different directions. Depending on the end point of your journey, you will need to choose one of them.

Terminal A at 100 Kiffissou Street serves buses from Athens to cities such as Loutraki, Patras, Nafplio and many other destinations in the Peloponnese and Northern Greece.

Athens-Loutraki bus at the bus station in Loutraki.

Terminal B at 260 Liossion Street focuses more on flights to Central Greece - such as Kavala and others.

Tourist and sightseeing buses in Athens

In Athens, as in many other cities in the world, open double-decker buses with an audio guide (there is a Russian language) drive around the city, in which you can sit by the window and drive around all the main attractions.

In total, there are 3 main routes in the city, and the number of stops is more than 40.

Buying a subscription for 24 or 72 hours, you can use the buses without restrictions, getting off and on at any of the stops.

Tourist buses are very popular in Athens.

Buses in the season run from 8:30 am to 19:30 pm. The interval between flights is about 15 minutes.

Among the main attractions covered by the routes are the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the National Archaeological Museum and many others.
