Where is the best place to stay in Zanzibar? The best beaches in the northern part of zanzibar

Last edited: July 2017

Zanzibar is the king of beach and sea recreation. It's worth going here for that. Beach holidays in Zanzibar are recognized as one of the best in the world. If you dream of swimming in the purest turquoise ocean, rather shallow and calm, lying on the snow-white sand like powdered sugar, walking along the endless deserted coast, it is on Zanzibar that your next vacation should take place.

The beach resorts of Zanzibar can be divided into four main areas: the north coast, the east coast, the beaches of Stone Town, the south coast, the west coast, the beaches of small islands around Zanzibar. We will not dwell on the latter, as we will do this in a separate publication. And now we are talking about the beaches of the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago.

Full map of Zanzibar with beaches. All the beaches of Zanzibar are called by name settlements in which they are located.

And below you will see a map with the most famous beaches of Zanzibar.

The best beaches of Zanzibar

The best beaches in Zanzibar for swimming (for those who do not want to fight the waves and depth) I consider Kendwa and Nungwi. If you choose the best of the best, then this is definitely Kendwa and Nungwi. They are located in the north, so the low tide here is not so critical. Although the eastern Bu-Boo-Boo can also be classified as the beaches of Zanzibar without low tides. However, he loses to them because of the rocky bottom in places. Although it’s worth saying honestly that you can’t do without low tides in any place. It's just that somewhere they are more noticeable, where the water leaves as much as 2 km, and somewhere they are less pronounced. Well, now about all the beaches in order.

Also, readers often ask us where is the widest beach in Zanzibar. We answer: we did not carry out such calculations, but they are not required, because almost all the beaches of Zanzibar are quite long and wide. But again, Kendwa and Nungwi differ in this respect for the better, since there is also an ideal sand, respectively, the area where you can comfortably sit is very large. But there are always more tourists on these beaches. Therefore, we recommend booking a hotel specifically on Kendwe or Nungwi, as well as on Bu-Boo-Boo: you can check out the options on booking site .

Beaches around Stone Town

Stone Town is the old center of the island in the city of Zanzibar. This is a noisy and dirty city in the Arab style, with numerous markets, cafes, souvenir shops and hotels. It's always hot and busy here. We will talk about Stone Town in a separate publication, but now we will notice that, in our opinion, although there are sandy beaches, pretty good, yet there is a port, the capital, a transit point, and therefore we do not recommend swimming in Stone Town. This city is best used for excursions.

Bububu Beach

Bububu Beach lies north of Stone Town, but not very far from it, about half an hour away. This is the first standing beach on your way and one of the most secluded on the island. There are several hotels almost at the water's edge, the path to which runs through the local villages with all the color that follows from here.

During our trip to Zanzibar, we stayed at the hotel on Bububu Beach, so we can tell a lot about it that you will not find in any tourist brochure.

This beach is very diverse. For example, in a small lagoon, the excellent Hakuna Matata hotel is located here. The lagoon here is clean, moderately shallow, moderately deep, with many marine life. At low tide, the water completely leaves it, so that you can walk out of the lagoon to the common beach. Although "general" is said rather boldly, since there are practically no people on the beaches around the lagoon. You can sometimes see a couple of people 500 meters away from you. And you may not notice anyone. Or see a herd of cows.

In my opinion, a significant plus of Bububu Beach is that the low tides here are not strong, only a few meters, and therefore you do not have to wander 2 kilometers in the heat in search of water.

The disadvantage of Bububu beach is that the bottom here is rocky in places. You have to try hard to find the sand. Although it is he who is present in the lagoon. But you will only swim in it if you stay at Hakuna Matata.

The exotic element of the beach around the lagoon is the mangrove trees rising directly above the water.

In general, if you are looking for an eco-friendly and secluded holiday, then you are here.

Mangapwani Beach

Mangapwani Beach is a beach of extreme beauty, and also deserted. Another indisputable advantage of the beach is that here, since this is the western coast of Zanzibar, the tides are not very noticeable.

In addition, there are attractions nearby. These are cells where slaves used to be hidden before being sent to other countries.

The beach got its name from the word "mango", which means "merchant". Yes, yes, they meant the slave traders. Although they traded by no means only in labor.

Mkokotoni beach

On this beach we were in the afternoon, in a fishing village. In principle, the beach makes a good impression, in one of the places there are masters who can give you a tour. During our visit, there was a strong low tide on the beach, so we did not appreciate the delights of swimming. We can say that the bottom is sandy and rocky, there are algae.

Kendwa Beach

It is considered one of the best beaches in Zanzibar, but there are conflicting reviews about it. Sometimes there is muddy water here. We can say with confidence that the beach is indeed dirtier than the same Bububu. But the sand is white and the water is usually turquoise.

There are also quite a lot of people here, as there are large hotels. On the other hand, you can eat inexpensively due to the fact that competition between beach establishments is high.

Nungwi beach

Nungwi (or Nangwi) beach is the extreme north point islands, is considered the best place for diving and one of the most beautiful beach resorts Zanzibar. The water here is truly turquoise. Much more turquoise than on Bububu. And white sand.

The road to Nungwi runs through banana plantations and groves of coconut palms.

From here you can go to sea excursions, including the island of Mnemba.

The main attractions of Nungwi are considered to be the coral reef.

Matemwe beach

This is a beach near the village of Matemwe on the northeast coast of Zanzibar, about 50 km from Stone Town. Matemwe itself is a medium-sized village, with thatched buildings and many street fishmongers from whom you can buy some of your catch.

Kizimkazi beach

Kizimkazi Beach is considered one of the best in all of Zanzibar. There are secluded bays, ancient buildings, from here you can watch dolphins, and if you're lucky, then swim with them, since here they are already accustomed to people.

Is here and luxury hotels.

Kizimkazi beach is located in the south of the island. It got its name from the nearby fishing village, which houses the oldest East Africa operating mosque Shirazi.

But it is worth considering that southern beaches Zanzibar is more suitable for those who feel confident in the water, as there are often waves here.

By the way, the eastern beaches of Zanzibar also have larger waves than the western ones. We can say that on the west coast in general it is almost always calm.

Kiwengwa Beach

The beach is located approximately 40 km northeast of Stone Town. Here, on the site of the village, large resort complexes, which completely swallowed the coast. There is a lot of music and fun, but you can also find more or less secluded places.

Uroa beach and Paje beach

These two beaches are located at a considerable distance from each other, but in many respects they have similar characteristics. Uroa beach, 40 km from the capital, is very authentic. Local peasants live here, so the coast is very colorful. But in this area, the ocean is most subject to ebb and flow, so during low tide during the day the ocean goes 2-3 km from the coast. At this time, local women come ashore to collect crabs and shellfish and grow seaweed plantations. Here you will also find a seaweed farm.In general, it is worth noting that due to the presence of a village and a fish market near the beach, the beach is rather dirty.

And Paje beach is located in the South-East of the island. There are also plantations of sea kale, however, as it seems to us, the beach is cleaner than its counterpart. Here you will also find white sand, as in many other parts of Zanzibar. But swimming in those areas where there are plantations, we would not advise. There, sharp sticks are driven into the sand: step on one - it won’t seem enough.

Chfaka beach

Chwaka beach and the village of the same name are located 40 km from the capital. During the colonial rule of Britain in Zanzibar, it was here that numerous English offices and government villas were located. But after the revolution in 1964, all the buildings were nationalized and are now in decline.
In addition to its past, the place is curious and the largest fish market on the island, where you can spend time with interest and have a snack with freshly prepared products.

The beach is strewn with fishing boats and shells and is quite dirty. Worth a look, but stop here for beach holiday- No.

Pingwe Beach

The beach is quite decent, located on the east coast of Zanzibar. Although we were here during the day, the tide was found to be negligible. Although in Zanzibar, in this regard, it doesn’t happen day after day: one day the low tide can be huge, and the next it can be barely perceptible. Pinggu Beach is clean, snow-white, long, there are few people, although there are cafes and hotels along the coast.

Michanwi Pingwe

Located next to the previous one on the east coast. The bottom of the ocean here is rocky and sandy, the tides are strong. This beach, or rather, the area not far from it, is famous for the original The rock restaurant (“Rock”). This is an expensive restaurant that serves seafood and cocktails. At low tide, you can walk to it, and at high tide, it is in the water, so they take boats there. As you understand, it is at this time that he looks as romantic as possible.

Bwejuu beach

The beach in the large village of Bwejuu (Buehuu) is located 55 km from Stone Town and 3 km north of Paje. The buildings made of coral stone under thatched roofs that stretch along the entire beach give a special touch to the beach. coastline. For lovers of silence, the beach may seem a bit noisy.

Dongwe Beach

Dongwe Beach is located in the east of Zanzibar. It is beautiful, but the tides here are strong and the bottom is not only sandy, but also stone. Much will depend on the right choice of hotel and location.

Pwani resort is one of the best on the east coast of Zanzibar. Here tourists will find all the attributes paradise island- azure water, comfortable hotels in traditional African style.

Also watch a video that will help you understand that a beach holiday in Zanzibar is a paradise holiday.

If you want the sea and the sun, but still doubt what to choose, choose a beach holiday in Zanzibar - you won't regret it!

Nungwi- the best beach in Zanzibar. Located in the north of the island. This is a fairly large village. good choice hotels and relatively low prices for food and drinks. There is a market, souvenir shops, an exchange office. There are 2 shops that sell alcohol. Every 100 meters there is a restaurant on the beach, where every day fishermen bring their catch (fish, squid, octopus). Right in front of you, seafood is cooked on the grill. There is a lot of competition for such establishments, so food prices are the lowest in Zanzibar. In general, Nungwi has a wide variety of cafes and restaurants, as well as national fast food, everything is very tasty and for any request. Everything is good here in terms of entertainment. Every day, on one of the beaches of Zanzibar, an evening beach party is arranged; there are two such places in Nungwi. Exact time and the place of the party must be specified with hotel guide or from the locals. Indian Ocean Nungwi beach is warm, clean, transparent, deep in places. In addition, not far from this resort there are good places for diving. Unlike most other beaches in Zanzibar, there are no strong low tides here. Low cliffs hanging over white sand create a unique landscape.

Kendwa- the most expensive and one of the best beaches in Zanzibar for swimming - the coast and the bottom are sandy here. It is located in the north, and the tides here are not very large. All beaches in Zanzibar are public and free, you can freely go to the beach of even the most expensive hotel. This popular beach is very beautiful: white fine sand, turquoise water and luxurious palm trees. It is well looked after - constantly cleaned and cleaned of algae. This is the widest beach in Zanzibar. It is quite crowded as there are large hotels around, as well as beach establishments where you can eat inexpensively. Water activities are organized on this beach. Tourists come here in the evenings specifically to watch the amazing sunsets.

Mangapwani- this is the closest beach to Stone Town, it is of extreme beauty, besides it is deserted. The indisputable advantage of the beach is that here, since this is the western coast of Zanzibar, the low tides are not very noticeable. Nearby are sights - chambers where slaves used to be hidden before being sent to other countries. The beach got its name from the word "mango", which means "merchant". The place is secluded and romantic. You need to know that the bottom on this beach is rocky, and it is advisable to take coral slippers with you for swimming.

Matemwe- Matemwe beach is located 50 kilometers from Stone Town. great place with snow-white, like sugar powder, sand, turquoise the purest water and overlooking Mnemba Island. If you describe the beach in two words - it is loneliness and serenity. There is no tourist infrastructure here, no shops, no souvenir shops and restaurants. The nearest fruit market is 2 km away. It takes 20 minutes by taxi to Nungwi. We recommend going here to those who are tired of the bustle of the city, the fast pace of life, people, those who just want to lie on the beach and drink cocktails. There are many expensive hotels operating on an all-inclusive basis. On the beach you will find large air-conditioned thatched bungalows in traditional African style. The beach is fully exposed to the problem of strong low tides - the main disadvantage of the east coast of Zanzibar. The ocean goes to a distance of 1.5 kilometers. At this time, local residents go out to "hunt" for marine life. The bottom here is sandy and rocky, a lot of hedgehogs and algae. We recommend taking coral slippers with you.

Pwani Mchangani- Pwani resort is one of the best on the east coast of Zanzibar. Here tourists will find all the necessary attributes of a paradise island - solitude, silence, peace, azure water, great beaches, comfortable hotels in traditional African style, as well as excellent weather all year round. Nearby is a small village where you can buy fruits and souvenirs. There are no cafes and shops nearby, so tourists prefer to walk to Kiwengwi. The beach is fully exposed to the problem of strong low tides - the main disadvantage of the east coast of Zanzibar. The ocean goes up to 2 kilometers away.

Kiwengwa until recently it was a small village, but at present, resort complexes built on the site of peasant houses have already stretched along the entire coast, almost absorbing the authentic atmosphere of an African village in the mouth of music and entertainment designed for a European tourist. There is a lot of music and fun here, but you can also find more or less secluded places - in small private boarding houses they still manage to maintain an authentic Zanzibar atmosphere of sincere cordiality and hospitality. Although in some parts of the coast there is a problem of strong low tides (up to 400 meters), this is one of the best beaches on the east coast of Zanzibar. It is very popular with tourists with children. a lot of good hotels and good access to the sea.

Uroa (Uroa)- Uroa Beach is located 40 km from Stone Town and is very authentic. Local peasants live here, so the coast is very colorful. In this area, the ocean is most subject to ebb and flow, so that during low tide during the day the ocean goes 2-3 km from the coast. At this time, local women come ashore to collect crabs and shellfish and grow seaweed plantations. Here you will also find a seaweed farm. Tourists go to this area mainly for the sake of living closer to Stone city which they plan to visit frequently. Here are the cheapest hotels in Zanzibar.

Pingwe- located on the east coast of Zanzibar. Pinggu Beach is clean, snow-white, long, cafes and hotels are located along the coast. Nearby is the restaurant "The Rock". Karafuu Photos Beach Resort& Spa 5*.

Paje- the beach is located on the southeast coast of the island of Zanzibar. Despite the fact that at low tide it takes a very long time to go to the depth (up to 1 kilometer), this place still enjoys well-deserved popularity because of its beauty. The coast and bottom are sandy. In addition, kitesurfing is good here. This beach is considered active, designed for young people. Tourists from all over the world come here for skiing and nightlife. In the evenings, there are parties and discos on the beach. Also, this beach has a developed tourist infrastructure - many shops, cafes, souvenir shops and a mini market.

Beach Kizimkazi considered one of the best in all of Zanzibar. There are secluded bays, ancient buildings, from here you can watch dolphins, and if you're lucky, then swim with them, since here they are already accustomed to people. There are also luxurious hotels in which tourists spend all their time. Kizimkazi beach is located in the south of the island. It got its name from the nearby fishing village, which was once the capital of the island and still houses the oldest mosque in East Africa from the pre-Ottoman period Shirazi. But it is worth considering that the southern beaches of Zanzibar are more suitable for those who feel confident in the water, as there are often waves here. The beach is almost deserted. Low tides up to 500 m.

Beach in the southeast of Zanzibar.
Here we stayed for the first two nights, but did not swim.
The place is bad for swimming: the bottom is old coral slabs, and when the sea ebb, what is not visible under water is exposed - sharp stones.
The surf is cloudy from a suspension of sand.

Somewhere not far from the shore, grass is overgrown, so the beach is strewn with dried algae.
The sand is fine and white - coral sand, cool even in the sun.
Beach rating = 3
It is possible to live here using the place as a base for trips around the island.
You can't swim.

Paje beach

Paje is located about 5 km north of Jambiani Beach.
In fact, this is a continuation of Jambiani beach, but there are no stones at the bottom.
The bottom is flat and shallow.
At low tide knee-deep, at high tide chest-neck.

The place is ideal for kiting.
For learning first: good wind from the sea, shallow, no stones, sand.
There are two kite schools here.
You can rent a SUP and swim with a paddle, which is what I did here.

Beach score = 4
You can live here, you can swim, you can eat - there are many restaurants around, the place can be used for trips around the island.
From here, the south of Zanzibar and the north are equidistant.

A good hotel on the beach - Arabian Nights Hotel - I can recommend. We booked a bungalow on the beach itself.

Pingwe beach

The first thing that catches your eye on Pingwe Beach is a huge amount of grass on the shore and in the water.
Lots of expensive hotels. We did not swim here, but they take snorkeling here.
The place is called blue lagoon.
Parking and entrance for swimming costs 2000.

If you order more than 8000 food and drinks at a local restaurant, entrance and parking are free.
Just north of the village is The Rock restaurant.
It is located on a tiny piece of land 30 meters from the coast.
At low tide, you can paddle there on foot; at high tide, a boat takes guests.
We visit the restaurant in the evening, during the day it is empty

Beach rating for appearance = 3
I did not want to stay here.
We drove all over the coast, looking for a place for the last night. This place didn't catch my eye.

I go back to Paje beach and turn right to the west, around Chwaka Bay- big bay
I leave for the village of Kitogani and drive north, without turning anywhere.
The road goes around Jozani Chwaka Bay national park where red monkeys live.

They can be seen along the road - they sit in trees and hamster something, not paying attention to cars.
They are not allowed to approach them, as the monkeys become aggressive and can bite. It is enough to take a photo of them from the car window.
Don't miss this place - there will be about 5 speed bumps in a row.

After this place, there will be a butterfly park on the right.
We didn’t go in, since these parks are in every country at every resort.
I wouldn't be interested.

We go further north.
There will be signs along the way. Spicy Farm - spice farm.
You can stop for 15 minutes and listen to a lecture showing plants.
Here are collected specimens that do not grow in Zanzibar: from India, Indonesia, Thailand.
These are vanilla, ginger, lemongrass, chili pepper, cloves, etc.

Everything can be smelled, touched and tasted.
After the end of the lecture, it is offered to buy a set of spices, and after the purchase - to give a tip.
The most expensive set is 10 dollars, it is enough to give a tip of 5000 shillings.

We go further north.
In one place, namely near the village Kivunge, there is a checkpoint (there are a lot of checkpoints on the roads, but the police there only wave their hands when they see my face.
Immediately fucked up to the seat belts. The barrier was closed, so we had to stop.
For a long time they read morality and soared the brain. As a result, he gave 5,000 shillings, the cop shut up and let go.

We go further north.
On the left, the exits to the hotels begin. I drive down the first exit, drive 2 km along a country road and run into a parking lot.
Parking lot 1000. I pay no questions asked, as there is loot in the car.
Going south to the beach Nungwi- just a picture of Aivazovsky, but there is no storm.

Nungwi beach (Nungwi beach)

Warm.
The sand is soft and white.
The beach is very similar to the beach on Boracay island.
The same bottom topography: despite the low tide, it is deep enough.

The color of the water and its transparency, as well as the absence of waves, make this place ideal for swimming.
Beach rating = 5 - this is the best beach in Zanzibar.

However, a fly in the ointment - there are so many hotels stuck in this place that it's hard to imagine how this place looks like in the season.
Difficulties with parking, especially to the north, closer to the village Nungwi.

This place (Nungwi) has many restaurants.
Some belong to all-inclusive hotels and at the entrance from the beach there are blacks in national costumes with clubs.
As I understand it, they are guarding the snack from the local public, which roams here selling glasses and freshly caught fish.

We look at the menu and compare prices, as well as the menu itself (the menu should have a maximum of 2 sheets) and choose one of the restaurants.
There is South African wine on the menu.
A bottle of 30,000, we agree on 20,000 - you have to bargain everywhere and always in Zanzibar.
The dishes served do not cause any complaints: a warm salad with octopus - like in Italy, only there is not enough olive oil.

After lunch we move further north.
In the village of Nungwi we turn left and run into a dive center.
Leaving the car at a dead end, we go out to the beach.
There are a lot of people here, but again, no one bathes except cows.
There is a lot of grass on the beach, although there are no waves.

In Zanzibar, the ebbs and flows are more than noticeable, and the cost of a vacation on this island can be compared with the most prestigious resorts peace. If you want something unusual, then I advise you to pay attention to Sri Lanka. This Island state has a number great resorts(there are noisy, quiet, secluded and others) and has recently become more and more popular.

About 100 kilometers from the capital of Sri Lanka, the city of Colombo, there is a small but very attractive resort from a tourist point of view, Hikkaduwa. This place attracts tourists due to its good developed infrastructure And gorgeous beaches which are considered among the best in the country. The resort has many hotels of different categories, which differ not only in the quality of services provided, but also in cost. Most budget travelers rent a small bungalow on the coast without any special amenities and just enjoy their vacation. Cafes and restaurants are found literally at every step and some of them offer dishes of Russian, Ukrainian and Caucasian cuisine. Every year, more and more often you can meet service personnel who speak Russian well. Tourists do not have any problems with currency exchange, rental of bicycles and various vehicles.

The beach of Hikkaduwa, which has a length of about 10 kilometers, also attracts attention. With such a length of the beach, even in the midst of tourist season, you can easily find a free place under the sun. Almost everywhere the beach is very wide, but there are places where it narrows quite a bit. There are many diving and surfing schools along the coast. If surfing directly depends on the weather, then diving is much more interesting, Hikkaduwa is one of the best places beauty in sri lanka underwater world. Directly in resort area special attractions and interesting places no, everything interesting is concentrated in the vicinity of the resort, so many tourists combine a beach holiday with excursions.

On the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, there is another interesting Sri Lankan resort of Bentota. Despite the fact that officially less than 40 thousand people live in this city, but due to the large number of vacationers, this figure increases several times. As well as in Hikkaduwa, the infrastructure in Bentota is developed at the very high level, but nightlife lovers may have problems (party lovers should look at other resorts). Often this resort is chosen for their honeymoon newlyweds. The beaches here are good and the waves are not as frequent as in Hikkaduwa.

Well, if you look purely from the point of view of ebb and flow, then you need to go to a resort like Unawatuna, which by and large is an ordinary fishing village, which is located on south coast Sri Lanka. With the arrival of tourists, the village began to develop rapidly, and this development continues to this day. A distinctive feature of the resort and at the same time its advantage is the main (central) beach of the resort. The advantage of this beach is that it is located in a secluded bay and strong winds they don’t get here, so there are no waves here. On weekdays, the resort lives a calm, measured life, and on Friday and Saturday, local bars located on the coast arrange various entertainment events and noisy entertainment. Young people love this place, so in general the resort can be called youth.

This post is rather educational and technical - about the island and its beaches. A little. As I already wrote, at first I wanted to rent a car and drive around the island, then we decided that we would hire a car (I planned 2 times for half a day), in the end we got very lazy on Kendwa beach and took a car for 85 USD. just for 1 whole day for a circular route along the beaches of Zanzibar (not all, of course) and a visit to Stone Town.

That's what strikes and always infuriates on the websites of travel agencies - this is a rare lack of professionalism in the description of the areas where they sell tours.

How can one write about Zanzibar beaches “luxurious” and “an alternative to the Maldives” - I would be ashamed to lie like that. Are the beaches good in Zanzibar? No. Is it worth going to them? Certainly! If you are interested in seeing the ebb and flow, walking and looking at the sea and local residents and swimming is guaranteed in the pool. But I feel sorry for those who bought into the "Maldive Beaches" and ended up in the Zanzibar reality. I’m already silent about maps with the wrong location of settlements and beaches ... Or a pearl of a tourist (!) Resource on the topic: “You don’t need to be vaccinated against yellow fever to travel to Zanzibar” - yes, this is the first thing they ask at the airport! Especially if you come from other African countries, which most often happens ...

I will write a little about what we saw. So, in Zanzibar, most of the beaches with hotels are located on the western side of the island (i.e. towards the mainland)
From our Kendwa, we first stopped at Fukuchani Beach.

Fukuchani - a historic house
Calling this place a beach is a bit of a stretch - a dead coral slab. Uzhoss-uzhoss. To be fair, I didn't find any hotels here. True, hotels and villas in this cheerful place are offered on the Internet. :) But there is a very picturesque house here, built by the Portuguese back in the days of Zanzibar. I will tell about the history of the island a little later. Here we turn and head east.

On the way I look at the local "architecture". Zanzibaris build houses of three types: the most exotic - wicker palm leaves. There are enough of them. Here are the types

The next type is “huts”, similar to the huts of the Maasai in Kenya - sticks coated with a mixture of soil (I don’t dare to call it clay),

Well, just like in a fairy tale about 3 little pigs - a stronger house, "hut"
and the third type is already brick houses. Moreover, bricks are made right there. They are somehow molded, pressed and laid out in rows, for some reason poured with water.
Top of Zanzibar architecture - brick house
Very good road quality. Where, of course, they are. And there is not everywhere. And the life of the Zanzibar people passes along the roads. These, by the way, are a dangerous movement. You have to understand that the locals, from two-legged to stupid chickens, can jump out under your wheels.

This is how we go to the beach matemwe. Beautiful strip of beach, deserted, beautiful water - we arrived at high tide. We change clothes and rush to the ocean. Well ... The entrance to the water is gentle and not very deep. Sand. However, the water is slightly agitated. The saddest thing is that grass begins in the sea near the shore. Moreover, on the day of our arrival, the grass not only grew at the bottom, but also floated. In principle, you can swim if you really want to. One entry into the water was enough for me.

Next we drive past the beach pwani mchangani, where there are quite a lot of expensive hotels. Access to the beach by car is difficult due to the density of hotel development, so we move non-stop towards the place Kiwengwa(Kiwengwa), where I almost accidentally booked a hotel, confusing it with Kendwa. Well, Kiwengva is a fairly large village. Picturesque and I would say prosperous.

Kiwengwa. Fauna
The beach looks very nice! We change into swimwear in the car as quickly as possible and instantly "in the sea"! Disappointing...the ocean here is even sadder for swimming than in Matemwe.
Public catering is present
Kivenga. In principle - it's good to relax and swim in the pool
Kiwengwa. Like this. Bar named after himself?
Very muddy water, also shallow, and fallen leaves are also added to the grass in the water. Therefore, I dip and immediately go to the shore. Brrrr, I couldn't swim here for 5 days! However, for non-fans of sea procedures, the place is definitely cute! It will be interesting to see the life of local residents and admire the ocean, and there are enough bars for leisure. And the photo shoots will be great! For those who like to swim, it is absolutely not recommended. Is 1 night to spend to collect different impressions of the island.
Tourist infrastructure of Kiwengwa
The next stop is very beautiful place Pongwe (Pongwe). It's not even a beach anymore, but a beach lover's nightmare. However, it's beautiful!!! The hotel is located on a rock in the bay in the sea. And you can go to it on foot "by water, aka by dry land", there is a village nearby. I liked it here. Purely enjoy the views. Behind the cape there is a more typical beach for the island - a long strip of sand. Basically, hotels are located there. So you can go))
Pongwe
Pongwe

Pongwe
Pongwe. Local
Pongwe. Local
But the next beach struck my imagination. Tightly. This is the beach Uroa. Rest assured, Uroa is a hotspot for hotels that sell a lot of tours. Uroa has a local fish market. A beach of rare dirt - a mixture of algae and garbage.

As Abdul said, all this happiness is thrown into the sea by the locals. The sea, don't be silly, brings waste back to shore with the surf. View - yes. Live - God forbid! Make no mistake, the websites of travel agencies talk about "the white sand of Uroa Beach." Yes, I believe that hotel beach areas can be cleaned. But living in such an environment is very expensive... Well, it would be unpleasant for me. There is a village in Uroa, but we did not examine it. So, a couple of photos on the way to the beach and from there

It is interesting to look at the fishermen. And even more interesting - how they process squid before selling - they are beaten off with sticks with all the dope. As Abdul explained, if he didn’t fantasize, squids are hard and will cook for a long time if they are not beaten off. That's how it stands knocking all over the beach.

Market in Uroa, there, under a canopy
Fishermen with helpers on the shore
I really liked the beach in Uroa! Look.

After Uroa, we went to Jozani Forest, the only place where authentic forests have been preserved and where red columbuses live, such funny monkeys.
To be honest, at first I regretted that I decided to go here, but the very diverse landscapes along the way quickly dispel my doubts.
