Mauritius Island, where we were lucky enough to spend two unforgettable weeks on May holidays this year, it is almost 320 km of stunning beaches. How to navigate in such diversity? I'm talking about those public beaches that I managed to visit personally. All of them are located on the west coast (we didn’t get to the east of the island this time), so from each of them you can admire the amazing Mauritian sunsets, when the sun literally “falls” into the Indian Ocean.

BeachBain Boeuf

Located on the northwest coast, not far from the extreme northern point islands (Cap Malheureux). A spacious public beach, on weekends, like all other beaches in Mauritius, it is quite crowded. There are sun loungers for rent, fast food kiosks, toilets and changing rooms. The beach offers stunning views of the islands of Coin de Mire, Ile Plate and Ile ot Gabriel located to the north of Mauritius.

Located south of Bain Boeuf beach. A small but very cozy beach with all the necessary beach infrastructure and a wide selection of cafes and restaurants nearby. An interesting feature: you look in one direction - coniferous trees, in the other direction - palm trees. There are sun loungers and parasols for rent, toilet, shower and changing rooms. But we didn’t like swimming here too much: a large number of sea urchins and sharp fragments of corals were found in the water. For those who swim with a mask, this is not a big problem, but for the rest, not to mention small children, the beach is hardly suitable.

BeachLe Morne

Wonderful beach at the foot of Le Morne Brabant. White sand, smooth entry into the water, the presence of beach infrastructure and the absence of sea urchins in the water made it one of our favorite beaches in Mauritius.

The water here is amazingly clear and felt warmer than other beaches. Another one interesting feature- only on Le Morne beach we felt a fairly fast current along the coast.

They don't swim here. At the entrance to the beach there is a sign warning that swimming here is life-threatening. However, the beach itself is beautiful! Visiting this place was for us one of the most memorable moments in Mauritius. Only here on the island you can feel the true power of the Indian Ocean: on all other sides, Mauritius is reliably protected by a ring of reefs, and ocean waves can only be seen and heard on Gris-Gris. But this is definitely worth doing - I'm sure the ocean element will not leave anyone indifferent!

I worked in Mauritius tour guide almost a whole year, and since then I really like to talk about it :) Today I'm going to tell you about how the different coasts of the island differ from each other, and what in general there is interesting for tourists on the island.

Mauritius is quite small, by car it can be crossed along in 2 hours. Across an hour and a half. Therefore, it does not make sense for tourists to choose the location of the hotel in relation to certain attractions, because it is very easy to get to anywhere on the island.

However, it makes sense to pay attention to which coast the hotel is located on, because everywhere there are pros and cons.

The north of the island is the city of Grand Bay and Pereybere beach, which is considered one of the best beaches on the island. There is really sand everywhere, it is not very windy, and what is most valuable, there is "civilization" here. The city of Grand Bay is perhaps the most party place in Mauritius. Here and restaurants, and discos, and hotels are not bad. In general, it is extremely comfortable to relax and live here.

(I just want to immediately warn you that when I say "the most party place", as well as "the most big lake" or "the coolest reserve" - do not forget to make allowances for the scale of the island, because what is "the most-most" for Mauritius, for us can be quite a common or even "provincial" phenomenon:) Be objective!)

Then we move to the west, the pearl of which can be called the city of Flic-en-Flaq. It is also quite touristy, although slightly smaller than Grand Bay. The advantage of the west coast is the extraordinary beauty of ocean sunsets and relative calmness. Of the sights located in the west, one can note the best Casela nature reserve on the island (where you can fly between the mountains along a tight cable, hug lions and tigers, go hiking in the mountains, go on a safari and much more), the treasure of the island is the Colorful Lands of Chamarel (islanders claim that nowhere else in the world you will find this anywhere else) and the Chamarel waterfall is the highest on the island. To the west, you can also include the Tamarin area and Cape Le Morne, where surfers like to relax.

The southern coast of the island is more agricultural than touristic, as here sugarcane plantations descend from the mountains and almost to the very coast. (of course, no one has ever seen it, because there are several thousand kilometers to the South Pole, but local guides like to repeat that there is no more land from here to Antarctica itself :)) And of course, La Vanille Park, where you can see crocodiles and ride a turtle!

On the east coast of Mauritius there is no " tourist centers", but there are many settlements of local residents, who are mostly engaged in agriculture. In such settlements there is absolutely no entertainment, but there are really tourist shops where you can buy souvenirs, cashmere products and branded items at affordable prices (some fashion houses, for example, Hugo Boss, have their factories on the island). There are many good hotels, but keep in mind that the wind in Mauritius blows from the east (from the open ocean), so the east coast is the windiest. And of course, the most fantastic sunrises over the Indian Ocean are also here.

The central part of the island is mainly large (on the scale of the island!) Cities with a population of several tens of thousands of people. Administrative center islands - the city of Cure Pip - is distinguished by interesting colonial-type buildings and very high humidity - it rains almost always here.

In various parts of the central region of the island, you can visit ancient estates former colonizers, crater extinct volcano, several reserves where you can ride horses, hunt deer or ride quad bikes, tea plantations, tea, sugar and rum factories, the sacred Hindu lake Ganga Talao with a giant statue of Shiva and various Hindu temple-boxes.

You can (and better) get around the island by car, because the local climate likes to please tourists with sudden tropical showers. If you are not afraid to get wet, you can rent a scooter. For those who like to immerse themselves in the environment, there is a fairly developed bus network, the only drawback of which is the early end of work (if my memory serves me right, then after 9 pm buses no longer run around the island).

Motorists need to remember that here, firstly, there is left-hand traffic, and secondly, there are many very narrow serpentine roads, so extreme vigilance must be exercised! Local drivers, of course, rush like crazy, and they can also be attributed to "obstacles on the roads." Renting a car per day costs about 50 euros. The cost of gasoline is about $ 2 per 1 liter. You can also rent a car already with a driver - about 150 euros per day, or hire a taxi driver who will most likely agree to drive you around the island all day for ridiculous money, but along the way will insist on visiting all the oncoming shops in order to get his percentage of your shopping. If you are still going for souvenirs, then let the guy earn extra money - this will still not affect the final cost of your souvenirs, and the taxi driver will be happy. One-time taxi rides around the island will be quite expensive, for example, the fare within one city is about 10 euros.

The history of the island is not rich, so you should not count on a variety of historical sights. Nevertheless, you still need to ride around the island, at least in order to visit the capital, Botanical Garden, the house of some planter, a rum or sugar factory, the sacred lake of the Hindus and the colored lands of Chamarel.
